"The Power of Perception" While I’m here in Paris, I came to think that this might be undoubtedly one of the greatest marketing successes in history. For decades, it’s been sold as the epitome of romance, sophistication, and elegance—an aspirational destination for people worldwide. But being here made me reflect on how strong marketing shapes expectations. The reality? It’s not all glitz and glamour. The streets can be dirty, trash is casually tossed around, homelessness is visible, and yes—rats roam freely in parks and alleyways. It’s far from the perfectly curated scenes we’ve seen in movies. But here’s the thing: the charm is still undeniable. Paris, with all its imperfections, is still a city steeped in history, culture, and an atmosphere that you can’t replicate anywhere else. The historical landmarks, the little cafes, the art, and even the chaos have a certain magic that makes you pause. It’s a powerful reminder of what marketing can do—not just for destinations, but for anything. It’s about creating a narrative so strong that the flaws don’t matter, and people still come for the dream. Respect to the French for maintaining such a unique vibe despite the reality. And respect to the marketers who’ve made the world fall in love with a city that’s both gritty and grand. Tomorrow (Thursday 27th June 2024), 11am - 12.35pm at the National Sports & Physical Activity Convention | International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) Joint Global Convention in Melbourne, I'll be Chairing the Big Issues Keynote Session No.4 - Sustainable Design for Next Generation of Community Facilities. The focus will be on sports and activity spaces - with the premise being that designing for future generations of users in a sustainable manner, will need to consider innovative approaches to expanding our traditional thinking. Does design - and how will design - shift to the customer and the key priorities of health impact and wellness outcomes, in addition to sports participation. Three presenters Marc Riemann | Mike Hall | Glenn McGovern will outline a foundation of thinking, before a panel of thinkers join the stage to dissect what the presentations mean in their own world... Corporate events can be pretty boring. Here are a few practical ways to level up for your employees, customers and partners!

A citizen turns up. A consumer, in this case, heads to Wetherspoons. A great conversation between Dan Burgess and Matt Barr on the Spaceship Earth Podcast. It left me thinking about outdoor sports and our transactional relationship with nature. I live in a place where this is tested to the max. We build ski lifts and cut ski runs into the mountains. It's almost impossible to connect with nature in that environment. Nature is used to generate capital. When you ski, you don't see wildlife, you see adverts for Prada and Chanel. Matt talked about a Surfers Against Sewage protest in Brighton, and how it was poorly attended. Even surfers and swimmers, that are swimming in shit didn't turn up. One friend of Matt's decided his time was best spent at Wetherspoons. I find it fascinating that outdoor sports communities use nature, aren't really connected to it, and don't turn up to protect it. I think this ties in with Jon Alexander's work about being citizens not consumers. A citizen turns up and they get involved. A consumer thinks of self interest and places their value in the things they own. Dan talked about becoming crew on spaceship earth. To get to that point we have to do a lot of inner reflection. In outdoor sports I think that begins with recognising that we are part of nature, not separate from it, and that when it thrives so do we. Why does the outdoor industry fail consistently to turn up? And why is the transaction with nature becoming more and more one directional?
