If you don't know the history of this one, please look it up. It's fascinating and very important to labor history. 2. The Tower Bridge in London opened to traffic. 3. Norman Rockwell and Jack Benny are born. 4. William Kennedy Dickson receives a patent for motion picture film in the United States. 5. An extreme national economic depression hit the US in 1894 leading to factories closing and mass unemployment and poverty. 6. Chicago Commons was founded on May 1 by Graham Taylor...but this isn't in Wikipedia's "1894" entry - although I can change that, I suppose.

Let’s choose to invest workforce development dollars in programs with an evidence base of success.

One thing that was on my mind over the weekend that is still lingering today is that the rest of this decade feels like a crucial time for charting Kentucky’s future. Will we as a state continue to build on momentum and move towards the future by establishing a foothold in key next-generation industries and paving a path for economic mobility for our talent to stay here and thrive? Or, will we cling to what’s comfortable and watch the bright minds of the next-generation leave and let the world pass us by? Will we be a state that leads the globe on the hardest challenges of our time, or will be a place where others come to reminisce on a time that once was? It’s up to everyone that has ties to Kentucky to keep us in the fight. It’s truly a fight against many global headwinds, but we can’t lose sight of what is at stake. We have to keep striving for just, equitable, purpose-driven lives that align with the values that make us all Kentuckians: grit, family, community, and ingenuity. I am optimistic, but we have to be intentional. #kycanlead #fightforkentucky

Maybe you have thoughts and ideas on a new world for your company. If that's you we should talk. The great work that Richard Rosenow is doing is just one example of how companies are pioneering the new world of work and giving people a powerful framework to start from. Below are just some questions you might want to consider as a primer if your company is leaning into your own "lego creation"... What is at the core of our skills strategy and how dynamic is it to the world of work at large? Do we have a structure by design that intelligently knows all the combinations of how these legos have been fit together in the past? Do we have a line of sight on how other companies are building new things with skills? Can we clearly see through the lens of skills who our people are internally and the ability to reconfigure to evolving needs of our workforce? Do we have a seamless way to look externally that helps us benchmark and compare apples to apples? How will our skills inform career pathways within our organization? How can we easily help our employees know the supply and demand of the skills they have? How do we effectively communicate the skills they don't have that are most important to the future of our workforce that are most similar to current skill profile they have? Does our L&D team have the ability to tap into that ecosystem and suggest learning content that generates the best ROI for the company and the employee?
