Is space debris a natural consequence of space exploration or a result of negligence? 🌠 Space debris is a growing concern in our orbit, especially in LEO. As our space activities continue to expand, the growing congestion of satellites and debris raises critical questions. Is the proliferation of space debris an inevitable byproduct of space exploration, or is it the result of poor practices and oversight? Or… both? 🔍What do you think is the primary cause of space debris? Let's discuss! #CleanOrbitFoundation #SpaceSustainability #SpaceDebris #KesslerSyndrome #SpaceExploration

Among our website performance, one particular KMI Column tends to garner the most click-throughs. Today, let's look back to that column by Austin Morris, KMI Co-Founder & Director of Engineering, Space Terms 2: LEO, MEO, GEO, and HEO. Space is big. As Douglas Adams put it so eloquently in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, space is really, really big. So let’s not talk about all of space right now, let’s just talk about the orbit of the Earth, which is still big. Let’s break it down and try to understand the different sections of Earth orbit and how they all play into the way that a satellite orbits. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gptK_hT4

Industry reading: Better data, innovation and regulation needed to tackle growing space debris threat 🗞️ 'With approximately one million objects measuring between 1 cm and 10 cm orbiting Earth, according to European Space Agency - ESA’s models, space debris is a looming issue for the growing space economy, participants said during a panel discussion entitled “Space Debris Mitigation – the Growing Threat of Space Junk” at Space Tech Expo Europe in Bremen, Nov. 20. The growing presence of debris, coupled with the rapid expansion of satellites and megaconstellation plans, is increasing the complexity of orbital operations. This presents risks not only to satellites but also to the global economy and security systems that depend on them.' Read now: https://lnkd.in/gppB_FWk

🌍 Navigating Space Debris: Collision Risks & Avoidance in Orbit 🚀 As we send more satellites into orbit and the debris field grows, the risks of collisions in space are becoming increasingly significant. Every satellite, space station, and spacecraft is at risk, and the consequences of a collision can be devastating — not just for the mission but for the future of space exploration. To mitigate these risks, collision avoidance maneuvers have become essential. These maneuvers are becoming more frequent as the orbital environment gets more congested. Without proactive measures, we could see a rise in incidents that could jeopardize our access to space. The trend is clear: as the number of objects in orbit increases, so does the necessity for effective collision avoidance strategies. Understanding and implementing these techniques is crucial for maintaining the safety and sustainability of our orbital environment. What innovative solutions do you believe can enhance collision avoidance as space traffic continues to increase? Share your thoughts and ideas below! #SpaceDebris #CollisionAvoidance #SpaceSafety #CleanOrbitFoundation
