We're pleased to see the Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario introduce the Geologic Carbon Storage Act, which enables regulation of commercial-scale carbon storage. ONresources | RichessesON says this could reduce emissions by 5-7 Mt/ year. We'll need ambitious climate policies to realize this goal. Our research found that Ontario has about 730 Mt of subsurface storage capacity. Significant investments are needed in order to address a meaningful share of the province's 31 Mt/year of industrial emissions using carbon capture and storage. https://lnkd.in/g4sP7RV9

⚠️The Supervisory Body of Article 6.4 must pause and acknowledge the failures of previous ‘safeguard’ approaches and include #IndigenousPeoples, women in all their diversity and local communities impacted by carbon markets in decision-making. #NoCarbonMarkets #NoFalseSolutions The Supervisory Body of Article 6.4 must acknowledge the equal status of other UN fora and their agreements including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the London Convention / London Protocol, and recognise these as scientific reference in terms of risks and impacts from geoengineering. The Supervisory Body must uphold the 2010 de facto moratorium on geoengineering under CBD, 2008 ocean fertilisation prohibition, acknowledge recent move to restrict marine geoengineering in the London Convention/London Protocol, and note commercial factors as key elements in these restrictions. 🔊Over 100 civil society groups worldwide are calling on governments to prevent marine geoengineering experiments and uphold the CBD moratorium. We keep hearing from various advocates that we have the technology and means to implement drastic and rapid changes to our energy systems, and that we need to do so because reducing emissions is so important. Couple of problems discussed here - firstly that just because we might know how something might be done doesn't mean we can just snap our fingers and it will happen. Secondly - the majority of people in the world see higher priorities than emissions reduction - and you're not going to convince them to put aside their priorities for yours. I'm not denying or trying to delay anything - but just making some realistic observations about how things can get done in the real world where people have to plan, finance, build and test stuff instead of just talking about it. #climatecrisis #emissions #supplychains #energysecurity
Doctor of geology and educator Brad Hayes brings some perspective to those who think emissions reduction is a simple game ... #energy #emissions #environment #industry #economy #intelligence #logic #respect

Permanent carbon storage is one of the tools needed to reduce the atmospheric content of the greenhouse gas that drives climate change. At the DTU Offshore Research Centre, they are currently investigating whether we can utilize the underground of the North Sea for carbon storage. “The advantage of existing and decommissioned oil and gas fields is that the underground is already well-defined because we have huge amounts of data on both the geological conditions and the installations out there. During the first ten years of the centre’s existence, we have built up expert knowledge about how liquids, gases, and pressure behave in this area, and these things together are key to understanding carbon storage in the North Sea’s subsurface,” says Charlotte Nørgaard Larsen, Head of DTU Offshore’s research into carbon storage. 📢 Just out: “UN-Science Summit: Countries Call for the Non-Use of Solar Geoengineering.” A blog post summarizing the key moments and developments on solar geoengineering at the recent #UNGA79 and its accompanying Science Summit. Some key takeaways: ✔️ Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba, serving as Co-Facilitator of the Pact for the Future, cautioned against the potential “misuse of innovations such as (…) geoengineering” in his opening remarks at the Summit of the Future. ✔️ Government officials convened in one of the panels to discuss pathways for effective and inclusive (restrictive) global governance of solar geoengineering. ✔️ During this panel, Vanuatu called for a non-use agreement on planetary-scale solar geoengineering technologies and urged countries and vulnerable communities worldwide to unite in opposition to solar geoengineering. ✔️ Similarly, a representative from Djibouti called upon countries to join forces and build towards a global majority opposing solar geoengineering. ✔️ The German cross-government position stressed the importance of the de facto moratorium on geoengineering under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as a basis for strengthening and operationalizing any future governance mechanism. These developments reflect a commitment by some of the most climate-vulnerable countries and regions to reject risky technological interventions like solar geoengineering and underscore the urgent need for real climate solutions. Hereby an important update on where controversial discussions on solar geoengineering are. The newly available blog below ⬇️ describes how during a session at the UN General Assembly Science Week in September 2024, we heard powerful calls for the non-use of solar geoengineering by representatives of some of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change: Vanuatu as a Pacific Island state, and Djibouti, sharing the perspective of African states. We now have a recording of the four-hour session. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eEgXPfw6 Find the session overview here: https://lnkd.in/ejmAkMqt ➡️ The calls for non-use during the New York session built on the important momentum generated in Nairobi in February 2024 at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6). Here, the African group of countries proactively called in a UN multilateral context for a non-use mechanism on solar radiation modification, building on an earlier decision taken by the African Council of Environmental Ministers in 2023. A brief analysis of UNEA-6 is here: https://lnkd.in/eKitF-VD These strong messages of growing concern and resistance by some of the most vulnerable countries are crucially important. We cannot afford to distract ourselves by contemplating these risky and speculative options like solar geoengineering at this critical juncture in time.

An insightful day with Environment Agency and British Geological Survey at The British Academy discussing the current and future environmental and societal challenges and opportunities of colocating subsurface energy activities. My takeaway - how we plan, prioritise and manage our use of the resources beneath our feet requires interdisciplinary thinking. Workshops like this are essential to inform the range of science activities required to bridge knowledge gaps. #geoenergy #netzero #geoscience #energy

I’ve been saying this for some time but this paper provides some detailed modelling. Policy can both work and produce unforeseen consequences. But what is the lesson to take here? We are already ‘geo engineering’ by emitting ghg pollution, but does pollution control need better understanding of ‘geophysiology’. https://lnkd.in/emKvm4eA
