Ottawa could establish a financial transfer program to incentivize provincial emissions reductions, says Trevor Tombe in a new piece in The Hub Canada today. Provinces are responsible for many areas central to emissions reduction, including transportation, waste management, electricity generation, and public buildings. “Federal funding tied to emissions-reduction outcomes could help provinces tackle these challenges on their own terms,” Tombe wrote. The transfer program could be modelled after the carbon tax, but instead of penalties, it would provide subsidies. “[F]or every tonne of emissions avoided, there’s a payment,” he wrote. “The further a province's emissions fall below this benchmark, the more funding it receives.” Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gKVUUFJt

Chris Regan should be a must read for every voting age Canadian. This very short article lays out the benefits of carbon pricing, the logic, and absence of alternative strategies from those campaigning to see it "axed". Everyone should brush up on the arguments in favour of retaining carbon pricing and tell all their friends and associates. Canada needs all of the tools in the toolbox to fight climate change, and promote the economic growth that comes from re-tooling our infrastructure. Mass electrification requires massive improvements in #energyefficiency to make this a financial win. #circuitmeter

Almost 60% of UK adults think the Government isn’t doing enough to tackle environmental issues, and yesterday we saw green policies fall off the top agenda again - even though many of them are popular with the electorate and can stimulate economic growth. The clean energy transition will be the biggest area for economic growth between now and Net Zero targets in 2050. This Budget is a missed opportunity to take bigger strides towards decarbonised, local energy to bring down energy bills and carbon emissions. The UK needs to back the right horse as we transition to a green economy, where decarbonisation and circular solutions for materials will be the foundation. #Budget #NetZero #GreenEconomy

Federalism in Canada means there will always be battles. The question is what the battles will be over. Rather than a fight on whether an oil and gas cap or clean electricity regulation is a good idea, or even constitutional, Trevor Tombe has a great idea for The Hub Canada on how the debate can be refocused on how much support Ottawa gives provinces to chart their emissions-reductions path https://lnkd.in/gfKJVYhb

📢 Calling all residents of what is so-called Ontario! The provincial government recently tabled Bill 165, the Keeping Energy Costs Down Act which would overturn a recent ruling by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). ⚡ The OEB’s ruling was to make gas infrastructure in homes the responsibility of developers instead of homeowners alongside transitioning from gas heating to more environmentally sustainable alternatives such as heat pumps. However, Bill 165 attempts to maintain the status quo and restrict the OEB’s independence to make such rulings in the future. The passing of Bill 165 may lead to higher costs of living, less transparent governmental decision-making, and setbacks to what is currently Canada’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/d6dYR8RT and learn how Bill 165 impacts homeowners and so-called Ontario’s climate future. 🌎 #Bill165 #NetZero #Explainer #homeowners #climatechange #heatpumps #climateaction #climatepolicy

This week’s Budget has done little to inspire hope that the UK Government is committed to tackling the climate emergency and lowering household energy bills. Whilst the likes of extending much-needed additional funding for households dealing with cost-of-living pressures is welcome, what is missing is meaningful investment in accelerating the decarbonisation of the UK’s housing stock and moving away from reliance on fossil fuels. Canada is embracing sustainable finance, and green bonds are at the forefront of this movement! Green bonds offer a way for governments and corporations to fund projects that benefit the environment, from renewable energy to clean transportation. With Canada's commitment to fighting climate change, the green bond market is rapidly growing, giving investors the chance to support eco-friendly initiatives while earning returns. #GreenBonds #SustainableFinance

because there’s no coherent plan for the project’s delivery, little attention has been given to its overall cost. All that’s clear is that it would almost certainly be completely unaffordable: for example, a recent National Infrastructure Commission projection of £1.3 trillion is probably far too low – estimates in excess of £3 trillion seem likely to be more accurate. The borrowing and taxes required for costs at this scale would destroy Britain’s credit standing and put an impossible burden onto millions of households and businesses.
