It’s exciting to see more natural burial options available. Not only that, there’s also a shift in how people perceive end-of-life planning, embracing more sustainable and meangingful choices. I highly recommend reading our blog post “7 Innovative Burial Alternatives” here: https://lnkd.in/gHbY54vq

Did you know at the peak of Black landownership, Black Americans owned over 16 million acres of land? Today, much of that land has been lost due to the economic and social barriers historically put in place limiting Black landowners’ ability to reap the economic and ecological benefits of their properties. Through NWF’s Longleaf for All Landowner Mentorship Program, this problem is being addressed by offering estate planning educational events to further protect Black-owned land. 🤝 This Black History Month, let’s keep in mind that racial injustices fuel environmental degradation, and vice versa. Investing in Black land ownership is an investment in sustainable forest management. Learn more 📲 https://ow.ly/Z50450QC5Pm #BlackHistoryMonth #LandOwnership #PrivateLands #Forests #LandManagement

Check out this insightful article from my Co-Director, Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson, on Indigenous leadership and stewardship of the Bears Ears National Monument, along with other ancestral lands and “resources.”
The Coalition's Co-Director, Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson (Potawatomi), recently contributed an article to the Grand Canyon Trust's Advocate magazine. In the piece, she reflects on the critical role of Indigenous leadership and Traditional Knowledge in the ongoing efforts to protect and steward Bears Ears. Charissa emphasizes that this stewardship is not just for the present generation, but for future ones as well, underscoring the essential role Indigenous leadership plays in shaping long-term conservation efforts. "What conservation means to me is we need to listen. We need to remember how to care for the land. We need to reconnect. A lot of us have been ripped from our homelands, and we’re losing our cultural practices. We need to take the time to reconnect. We need to relearn. So how do I show up in the conservation space? It sounds cheesy, but I operate as an 'aspiring ancestor.' How are my actions contributing to ancestors who aren’t born yet?" https://lnkd.in/gNZiizUn

This year at GreenBiz, Kerry Cesareo from World Wildlife Fund, moderated the panel with partners from the Mobile Basin Heirs’ Property Support Initiative—Jennie Stephens from the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation, Vangela M. Wade from Mississippi Center For Justice, and Sophie Beckham from International Paper, discussed how companies can replicate a corporate-community partnership model that honors history and helps underserved communities retain their generational land while promoting productive, sustainably managed forests. Also announced was the initiative’s expansion beyond Mississippi and into Alabama, where Legal Services Alabama will join as a partner. Heirs’ property—a leading cause of involuntary land loss for Black families—impacts communities and the fate of American forests. Only by preventing the exploitation of families and their land can we prevent forest fragmentation and loss in this country and mitigate the worst effects of climate change.
