🌊 Protecting and Restoring Our Waters Together 🌊 The Mission Ocean aims to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems, reduce pollution, and foster sustainable blue and green economies. To achieve its objectives, four Lighthouse areas have been created in major European sea and river basins. The Danube Lighthouse focuses on addressing freshwater challenges and opportunities in the Danube region. The Mission is not just about preserving the ocean but also addressing the unique challenges faced by our rivers and watersheds. 🌊 World Ocean Day 2024: Awaken New Depths 🌊 Today, we celebrate World Ocean Day 2024 with the powerful theme: "Awaken New Depths." This theme invites us to explore and deepen our understanding of the vast, mysterious oceans that cover more than 70% of our planet. The ocean is not only a source of breathtaking beauty and wonder but also a vital component of Earth's ecosystem, providing us with oxygen, regulating climate, and sustaining countless species, including our own. Oceans play a crucial role as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing a significant portion of the carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted by human activities. However, our oceans are in peril. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change are depleting marine life, degrading habitats, and disrupting the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems. The need for conservation and sustainability has never been more urgent. 🌍🚽 World Toilet Day! 🏔✨ Today we’re diving into an easily overlooked but vital topic: human waste on mountain expeditions! 💩🏔 🧗On average, each climber produces about 250 grams of excrement daily💩. For a summit attempt, an expedition team of 10 people usually spend 14 days on high-altitude camps⛺️. That means at least 35 kg of human excrements can be produced and need to be dealt with. Where will all these 35 kg of human excrements💩 go after the expedition? A decades-old practice that many expedition operators have dealt with is to leave human poop on the high mountains, either buried in the ice and rock, or on exposed ground. However, due to extreme temperatures🌫❄️🌩, human waste left on high altitude mountains does not fully degrade. Moreover, the violent forceful winds blow away whatever that covers poop piles. Eventually, high mountains will be turned into an open toilet.🚽 💡 Did you know exposed human excrements can contaminate water sources, harm ecosystems, and spoil pristine trails for future adventurers? 🧗♀️ 🏞 Here’s how we can make a difference: ✅ Portable Toilets & Pack-Out Policies: Using portable systems or degradable “pack it out” bags ensures waste is removed responsibly. ✅ Leave No Trace Principles: Commit to minimizing our environmental impact, including proper waste management. ✅ Support Sustainable Expeditions: Choose guides and companies prioritizing eco-friendly practices. I feel privileged to be living in a place where the beauty of blue skies is a part of everyday life. It’s something I never gave much thought to—until I traveled to places where such a simple yet profound sight is a rarity. During my travels, I met people who have lived on this planet for 30 to 40 years, never left their hometowns, and didn’t even know that blue skies existed. It was eye-opening to realize that what I take for granted is a distant dream for so many, a reminder of the stark inequalities in environmental conditions across the globe. Today, on the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, we are reminded of the importance of clean air for our health, our environment, and our future generations. Clean air is a basic human right, yet millions around the world are denied this fundamental need. As we mark this day, let’s renew our commitment to ensuring that everyone, no matter where they live, can one day look up and experience the vast, clear blue skies that inspire hope and well-being. We all share one planet, and it is our collective responsibility to protect the air we breathe.
