📣NEWS JUST IN: Alberto Costa re-introduces the bill to ensure all washing machines have a microfibre filter fitted as standard. House of Commons. 29 OCT 2024. Today Alberto Costa re-introduced the Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill in the House of Commons. 📃The Bill would require washing machine manufacturers to fit microplastic-catching filters in all new domestic and commercial washing machines. The Bill also aims to raise awareness of the polluting effects of microplastics on our rivers and seas. 🌊TWO HUGE WAVES OF PROGRESS 🌊 Although this isn’t the first time that the bill has been presented Cleaner Seas Group® sincerely hope it’s the last and successful push for this necessary legislation to come into effect. “Microfibre plastic pollution is one of the most pervasive and avoidable forms of plastic pollution. Over a third of all environmental microplastics come from clothing, and research shows that installing filters on washing machines can reduce microfibre emissions by over 78% per was cycle and this number is improving as the technology progresses. Two years ago, I presented this 10 Minute Rule Bill to the House, and many colleagues have approached me since expressing support for this measure and encouraging me to present this Bill to the House again. It has cross-party support and would be an easy win for a government committed to reducing the effects of microplastic pollution on the environment and our health.” ALBERTO COSTA 👀READ MORE ABOUT THE BILL: https://lnkd.in/gZSTrtBd 👀READ MORE ABOUT ALBERTO COSTA: https://lnkd.in/gBs6h8DH) ✊SUPPORT The second reading of this bill will happen on 7th March. Between now and then we urge you to make noise! Share this post. "In Mobilizing Federal Action on Plastic Pollution: Progress, Principles, and Priorities, the Federal government is—for the first time——formally acknowledging the severity of the plastic pollution crisis. In particular, the report reaches two key topline findings: 1. Successfully combatting plastic pollution requires the United States to take a comprehensive approach that addresses the impacts of plastic throughout the entire lifecycle – from production to end of life; and 2. The scope, scale, and complexity of plastic pollution require coordinated action from all levels of government." While it may be obvious to people working on plastic pollution reduction, the call from The White House is important and hopefully a major signal that serves to unlock capital, spur investment and policy change. #plasticpollution #plasticpackaging #climateaction #wastereduction #petrochemicals #circularity #CPG

The NSW government is progressing with a strategy to reduce plastic pollution, which has reached crisis levels in the state, as well as globally. 😢 Of the 891,000 tonnes of plastic waste which was generated in 2022-23 in NSW, only 14% was recycled. Globally, that figure is as low as 9%. After engaging in a broad stakeholder consultation process in 2023, the NSW government has prepared a draft action plan – NSW Plastics: The Way Forward. The plan identifies three key focus areas; reducing plastic litter, reducing harmful chemicals in plastics and microplastics, and keeping pace on plastics action. Each focus area includes proposed actions with staged targets, ranging from 2025 to 2030. Feedback on the proposed action plan has been sought, after which we expect the plan to be finalised and the necessary policies to be formalised. Businesses operating or selling in the state of NSW should familiarise themselves with the proposed actions. Broadly, these actions will require businesses to: ♻ Redesign packaging with recyclability in mind ℹ Provide more information to consumers on the packaging materials they use ⚗ Remove harmful chemicals from their packaging 💻 Collect and share more data about their products' impact on plastic pollution 🚮 Set litter reduction targets, in some cases Many of these actions will require changes that impact financial and operational planning. This could include extending your bill of materials data with environmental dimensions, costing new packaging inputs or modelling operational changes to utilise new materials. Zooss can help businesses get ready for these incoming requirements, remain compliant, and help tackle plastic pollution! We're pioneering a new approach to business planning that we call Sustainable Business Planning (SBP). By embedding environmental and social sustainability into financial and operational planning, we aspire to lead our partners into a more inclusive, equitable and regenerative future. 👉 Find out more about getting started in Sustainable Business Planning: https://lnkd.in/gP7XztzQ 👉 Contact us to start planning sustainably: https://lnkd.in/gKt_Thm9 Better Planning. Major Step Toward Zero Pollution: Council Agrees on Reducing Plastic Pellet Losses Today, the EU Council adopted its general approach to a groundbreaking regulation aimed at preventing plastic pellet losses—small raw materials essential for making plastic products. Plastic pellet losses account for the third-largest source of unintentional microplastic pollution, with devastating consequences for the environment, economy, and potentially human health. The proposed regulation sets ambitious rules to improve handling practices across the supply chain, including: 🔹 Economic operators managing more than 5 tonnes of pellets annually 🔹 Obligations for sea-going vessels transporting pellets 🔹 Mandatory certification or self-declaration for compliance, based on scale Notably, maritime transport, responsible for 38% of EU pellet movement, faces specific obligations, such as improved packaging and cargo handling, ensuring greater accountability at sea. If implemented effectively, this regulation could reduce plastic losses to the environment by up to 74%—a monumental step in the fight against microplastic pollution, which transcends borders and ecosystems. The Council’s position balances ambitious environmental goals with the need to avoid unnecessary burdens on businesses, ensuring a level playing field for both EU and non-EU carriers. With negotiations set to begin in 2025, this regulation represents a turning point for a cleaner, more sustainable future. 💡 Key Impact: This initiative aligns with the EU's zero-pollution action plan to reduce microplastic releases by 30% by 2030. By addressing plastic pellet losses, it not only safeguards marine life and ecosystems but also mitigates long-term climate and health risks. https://lnkd.in/e8zxWXUU #Sustainability #ZeroPollution #Microplastics #EURegulation #CircularEconomy #EnvironmentalPolicy #PlasticPollution
