Holiday Inn’s decision to switch to wooden access cards is a commendable step towards embracing sustainability and the circular economy. Unlike traditional plastic cards, these wooden alternatives can be recycled and reproduced, reducing waste and contributing to a more eco-friendly cycle. Small innovations like this highlight how businesses can lead positive change through sustainable, circular practices. 🌍♻️ But what other circular economy solutions can the hospitality industry implement? Hotels could explore eliminating single-use plastics by offering refillable toiletries, using biodegradable guest amenities, or sourcing furniture made from recycled or upcycled materials. Additionally, investing in food waste management systems that convert organic waste into compost or energy could further close the loop. These initiatives not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance operational efficiency and appeal to eco-conscious travelers. #Throwback #Johor #Malaysia #CircularEconomy #Recycling #Sustainability #Innovation #EcoFriendly

How do you Recycle Guest Waste in a Hotel Room? I recently attended a supplier conference at Nottingham Venues and stayed at their hotel overnight. It was a very pleasant stay with great staff and facilities. The hotel has a very strong sustainability focus with lots of initiatives to improve their green credentials. When it came to bedroom recycling, they have opted for tent cards in the room. I have been working with a few hotel chains recently which have decided to take the same route, which I think is a great solution. I find that having more than one bin in a room takes up too much space and is a little unsightly. Dual stream bins tend to be too small, one plastic bottle fills the compartment. Asking a guest to take their recyclable to a central recycling station is an option, but this will rarely happen especially when paying hundreds of pounds a night for a stay. I’m interested to hear how you are dealing with guest waste in room, and if it is causing a challenge for your hotel. With new Recycling Legislation coming into effect on 31st March next year please get in touch if you would like to discuss how we could help. #recyclingweek #recycling #simplerrecycling

International Plastic Bag Free Day is a great reminder of the impact we can make by reducing single-use plastics in the hospitality industry. Hotels and vacation rentals play a major role in this global effort, and many are already making progress towards more sustainable practices. Switching to alternatives like cloth or paper bags can greatly reduce plastic waste. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 100 billion plastic bags are used in the U.S. each year, with a significant portion ending up in oceans and landfills. By opting for reusable or biodegradable options, hotels and vacation rentals can enhance their green reputation and attract guests who value eco-friendly practices. Guests today are increasingly aware of environmental issues and appreciate businesses that align with their values. This shift towards sustainability can lead to greater guest satisfaction and loyalty. #HospitalityIndustry #Sustainability #PlasticFree #EcoFriendly #GreenHotels #VacationRentals #GuestExperience #TravelTrends #EnvironmentalImpact

🔄 Circular Economy: Beyond Recycling ♻️ Have you ever wondered if the circular economy is just another term for recycling? While it may seem similar, the circular economy goes beyond mere recycling. It's about creating products designed to last through multiple lifecycles, whether through maintenance, repair, redistribution, refurbishment, or re-manufacturing. Unlike recycling, which perpetuates the linear economy of creating, consuming, and disposing, circular economy principles aim for sustainable consumption patterns. In the tourism and accommodation sector, the UNWTO recognizes the potential for circularity to thrive. With dependencies on agriculture, food, built environment, and transport, this industry can benefit greatly from circular value creation and capture within its chains. It's time to embrace circular economy principles to transform our approach to resource flows and commodity value chains. 🔹 Benefits of Circular Economy for Accommodation Providers: 1️⃣ Enhanced Sustainability Image: In today's eco-conscious world, consumers, especially tourists, prioritize sustainability. Adopting circular economy strategies helps hotels reduce their environmental footprint and stand out as eco-friendly destinations. 2️⃣ Reduced Resource Costs: With energy prices on the rise, circular practices offer a buffer against escalating expenses, ensuring long-term financial resilience. 3️⃣ Cost Savings: By designing products for durability and repairability, hotels can minimize the need for frequent purchases, leading to significant cost savings. At I Am Sustainable Studio, we're leading the charge by transforming hotel textile waste into a regenerative resource. Our circular process not only reduces waste but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable future. Hotels, join us in embracing circular economy principles to make a positive impact on our environment and your bottom line. ♻️ #CircularTuesday #HospitalitySustainability #CircularEconomy #TextileWasteChallenge #GreenHotels #SustainablePractices #IAmSustainableStudio Source: https://lnkd.in/grgExHG9

The Importance of Plastic Reduction and Recycling in the Hospitality Sector In today’s world, sustainability has become a key focus in every industry, and hospitality is no exception. With the increasing awareness of environmental issues, hotels and resorts have a crucial role to play in reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling efforts. Plastic is one of the most commonly used materials in hotels, from guest amenities to packaging and food services. However, the overuse of single-use plastics is contributing significantly to pollution. As hospitality professionals, we must prioritize reducing plastic usage and implementing sustainable alternatives. **Recycling Initiatives and Sustainable Practices** Many hotels are now adopting practices such as replacing single-use plastics with biodegradable or reusable materials. Examples include using refillable toiletry dispensers, offering glass or metal water bottles, and providing sustainable alternatives for food packaging. Recycling stations in both guest and staff areas are becoming more common, making it easier for everyone to contribute to waste reduction efforts. **Training and Engagement in the Hospitality Sector** One of the most effective ways to implement these sustainable practices is through staff training. Hotels need to ensure that every team member is well-informed about plastic reduction strategies and recycling protocols. Training programs should cover waste segregation, energy conservation, and sustainable housekeeping practices. Engaging staff in these efforts creates a culture of responsibility and sets an example for guests. As part of the hospitality industry, we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment while still delivering excellent service. Together, we can lead the charge towards a greener future for our planet. --- **#SustainabilityInHotels #PlasticFreeHospitality #EcoFriendlyTravel #GreenHotels #SustainableTourism #HotelManagement #RecyclingInHotels #HospitalityTraining #GoGreen #ZeroWasteHotels #PlasticReduction #EcoTourism #EnvironmentalSustainability**

📣 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞! ☕ ✈ There are challenges in everyday airport management that survive casually for decades because they are not critical enough to attract attention. Overcoming them, however, means unlocking the benefits that have lain dormant alongside airports' traditional role of moving people. Among these challenges is the ability to clearly distinguish waste from resources and, more importantly, to understand what can be done with these resources other than incineration. Progress has been made in this respect with organic waste and its potential to be recycled and/or converted into valuable energy through biodigesters. The Royal Schiphol Group as a partner of TULIPS – Green Airports is now going a step further by isolating coffee grounds as a single resource from the organic waste stream generated by airport staff and passenger throughput in the airport terminal. When being fully implemented, this approach could make Schiphol Airport an important supplier to industries outside the aviation sector, such as the cosmetics industry, which is increasingly discovering coffee oil for skin treatments, for example. Coffee grounds is considered to be the key raw material for the production of such oils but it could also be used for many other purposes, as only a small fraction of the minerals in the coffee are extracted during the brewing process. Burning the coffee grounds in a mix of waste on the contrary must be considered the least favorable of the options available, also from a GHG emission perspective. In numbers To better understand the potential impact of separating coffee grounds from the rest of the airport's (organic) waste, the following example can be considered: According to ACI EUROPE, Schiphol Airport handled approximately 62 million passengers in 2023. Based on the consumption habits of different types of coffee in the EU, an average of 10g (8-12g) of ground coffee per cup can be assumed. If Schiphol Airport managed to recover the coffee grounds of just 1% of travellers passing through the terminal, a total of 62 tonnes of valuable resources would be added to the market each year. However, it is reasonable to assume that more than 1% of passengers stop for a coffee, and we haven't even talked about the employees. The 62 tonnes of ground coffee provide the basis for 3000 to 6000 litres of coffee oil at an estimated market value of €600 per litre at resale prices. ❕ The programme to separate coffee grounds for upcycling at Schiphol Airport will start on a small scale in two weeks' time and we look forward to finding out how much can actually be collected in the first trial.
