Are digital screens doing more harm to our eyes than we realize? Some may argue that concerns over screen time and eye health are exaggerated or that technology and screens inevitably are part of our modern lives. Others might point out advancements like blue-light filters and screen breaks. But I remember a colleague who struggled with digital eye strain. After adopting the 20-20-20 rule, he reported fewer headaches and more comfort at work. Here are a few pointers to protect your eyes in a screen-heavy world: - Use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. - Adjust your device settings: Lower screen brightness and opt for blue-light filters. - Prioritize regular eye check-ups: Stay ahead by spotting issues early. What strategies do you use to keep your eyes healthy? The right to sleep 😴 You have a right to enjoy privacy and a peaceful nights’ sleep, thanks to the European Court of Human Rights Article 8. But safeguarding those rights for patients who need regular night-time checks, is more complex. Two nurses were frustrated by the need to wake their patients during their rounds, switching on the lights and fumbling with clumsy controls. They felt manufacturers were out of touch with life on the front line. So they came up with their own simple solution: a wearable rechargeable LED light – according to the article by HealthLeaders. Another team designed a similar approach, a rechargeable dim blue-depleted portable light 'pod'. Patients in this small pilot study reported a small but significant 2-point average improvement on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. 8 out of 10 of the care providers who used it in this trial responded that 'the lighting pods provided adequate lighting for overnight care tasks'... Occam's razor in action? - read more about this in an article by the Thomas Jefferson University, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and UPMC. All articles in my latest blog. I recently had the incredible opportunity to speak with Martin Moore-Ede, one of the pioneering researchers who helped discover the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)—the human biological clock. Our conversation delved deep into the impact of natural light cycles and the dangers of artificial lighting on our health. As Martin explained, melatonin is essential for sleep quality, recovery, and regeneration. But to get the full benefits, we need to minimize exposure to blue light in the evening. He emphasized how crucial it is to maintain proper day-night cycles and why sleeping in a dark room can extend your lifespan by up to 30%! This conversation has significant implications for lighting design. We must be mindful of how we design spaces, especially when it comes to evening lighting. The right color temperatures, wavelengths, and spectrum engineering can protect against cardiovascular disease, cancers, diabetes, and mental health issues. Healthy lighting isn’t just about comfort; it’s essential to overall well-being. Consider the Potential Risks of EMF from Earbuds... In our tech-driven world, earbuds have become a ubiquitous accessory, accompanying us through workouts, commutes, and work calls. However, as convenient as they are, it's essential to be aware of the potential risks associated with prolonged use, particularly concerning electromagnetic fields (EMF). The EMF Concern Electromagnetic fields are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting. The increasing use of wireless devices means we are more exposed to EMF than ever before. Here’s why it's important: 🔸 Potential Health Risks: Some studies suggest a link between long-term EMF exposure and various health issues, including headaches, sleep disturbances, and even more severe conditions like cancer. 🔸 Brain Proximity: Earbuds, especially wireless ones, are in close proximity to the brain, leading to higher localized exposure levels. This proximity raises concerns about potential impacts on brain health and cognitive functions. 🔸 Children and Adolescents: Young people are more susceptible to EMF because their skulls are thinner, and their brains are still developing. This makes the potential risks even more significant for this demographic. ❓ What Can You Do ❓ 🔸 Limit Usage: Use earbuds sparingly. Opt for wired headphones, when possible, as they emit lower levels of EMF. 🔸 Keep Distance: When not in use, keep your earbuds away from your body. Store them in a bag or on a desk rather than in your pocket. 🔸 Airplane Mode: Use airplane mode on your device when you don't need an internet connection, reducing EMF exposure. 🔸 Speaker Mode: For long conversations, consider using the speaker mode on your phone instead of earbuds. Staying Informed It's crucial to stay informed about the devices we use daily. While research is ongoing, taking preventive measures can help mitigate potential risks. For those who want to delve deeper into this topic, here are some resources: 🔹 National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS): NIEHS on EMF 🔹 National Cancer Institute: Electromagnetic Fields 🔹 Scientific American: Are AirPods and Other Bluetooth Headphones Safe? As we embrace technology, let's also be mindful of our health. By making small changes, we can enjoy our gadgets while minimizing potential risks. With age, you might have difficulty focusing on objects that are close up. You might become more sensitive to glare and have trouble adapting to different levels of light. Ageing also can affect your eye's lens, causing clouded vision (cataracts). Habits to promote eye health: - Schedule regular checkups. Follow your doctor's advice about glasses, contact lenses, and other corrective devices. - Take precautions. Wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat when you're outdoors. #ageinghealthtips #ageingeyes #healthcare
