SB 1047, an artificial intelligence safety bill, different than some of the other AI bills passed in CA recently. The bill would have required large AI developers to implement safety measures and undergo assessments before releasing their systems to the public, but Newsom argued it applied overly stringent standards even to basic AI functions. The veto has disappointed AI safety advocates and some legislators, while tech giants like Google and OpenAI welcomed the decision.
