In the discussion of climate challenges, their impact on the planet, and solutions, I've never found the apocalyptic angle particularly helpful. However, it's clear that trends continue to emerge and converge raising cause for concern. Population growth, rapid urbanization, the underbelly of middle-class growth, food and water security, and rising conflict are just a few. How do we mitigate these challenges? Many leaders, particularly those in emerging economies, continue to pursue growth at a substantial cost to the environment and future generations. It is the right of these inhabitants to secure a better life than generations before, but what does that "better life" entail? I do believe that this growth can be achieved sustainably. Despite this belief, global alignment on the problem and solutions remains distant. Focusing on urban-based solutions and a more equitable distribution of economics across the climate ecosystem will be necessary to mitigate future challenges. #climatechange #geopoliticalrisk #urbanization #megacities #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sdg12 #sdg2030 #sustainablecities

“All of humanity could share a prosperous, equitable future but the space for development is rapidly shrinking under pressure from a wealthy minority of ultra-consumers.” Following the publication of the Earth Commission’s report in The Lancet Planetary Health this month, it is clear that hope lies in sustainable lifestyles, a radical transformation of global politics and fair distribution of resources. The #SafeAndJust space that would enable all to thrive is shrinking, but it is still possible to reach. This will depend on a fairer distribution of resources, a rapid phase-out of #FossilFuels and the widespread adoption of low-carbon, sustainable technologies and lifestyles. All of humanity could share a prosperous, equitable future but the space for development is rapidly shrinking under pressure from a wealthy minority of #ultraconsumers, a groundbreaking study has shown. Growing #environmentaldegradation and #climateinstability have pushed the Earth beyond a series of safe planetary boundaries, say the authors from the Earth Commission, but it still remains possible to carve out a “safe and just space” that would enable everyone to thrive. That utopian outcome would depend on a radical transformation of global politics, economics and society to ensure a fairer distribution of resources, a rapid phase-out of #fossilfuels and the widespread adoption of #lowcarbon, #sustainabletechnologies and lifestyles, it said...

Key takeaways: “A “safe and just space” is still possible by reducing the resource use of the top 15% of emitters and rapidly adopting renewable energy and sustainable technologies.” “It is dependent on a fairer distribution of resources, a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels and the widespread adoption of low-carbon sustainable technologies and lifestyles.”

Climate change: questions asked in science to save the Planet: : Is it possible for all humans to escape poverty and be safe from harm caused by Earth system change — if economic systems and technologies are dramatically transformed and critical resources are more fairly used, managed and shared. These changes — facilitated and enacted by governments, the private sector and civil society together — provide an historic opportunity for societies to thrive on a stable planet for generations to come, says researchers.

#ActiveHope 🍀 As the just published - The 2024 state of the climate report: Perilous times on planet Earth starts with the statement - "We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt.", this is high time to feel the pain. Our greed, absurdities and disrespect for nature and environment are leading us to the runway #climatechnage and inevitable #collapse. The Deep Adaptation Forum and Jem Bendell have already started working on this and in many ways are supported by the r3.0 and its work on #collapseresilience. More about the report here: https://lnkd.in/d5A2GyKk But this is also high time to talk about #Hope, not about wishful thinking but about #ActiveHope, wonderfully put by Joana Macy. We may be at the brink of collapse but I would argue that we are also at a brink of #transformation. #communities around the world are demonstrating #agency with #innovation and #resistance in all different platforms ranging from COPs to Bioregions Project. They are perhaps still #fractals and have't yet scaled out to create the #positivetipping effect, but we are close. I actively hope for humanity's future, a future where we respect nature and each other and also where we thrive together. #ClimateActionNow Ralph Thurm Bill Baue Karen O'Brien Helén Williams Karlstad University Photo credit: Krinova Incubator & Science Park

This report states that 'all of humanity could share a prosperous, equitable future but the space for development is rapidly shrinking under pressure from a wealthy minority of ultra-consumers future. Growing environmental degradation and climate instability have pushed the Earth beyond a series of safe planetary boundaries, but it still remains possible to carve out a “safe and just space” that would enable everyone to thrive.' However, that outcome 'would depend on a radical transformation of global politics, economics & society to ensure fairer distribution of resources, a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels & the widespread adoption of low-carbon, sustainable technologies & lifestyles'. That says it all - we need urgent and radical, fundamental change in the world to ensure that both humanity and all other species can survive on a healthy planet. https://lnkd.in/esQU2p8p

🚨 Our planet's future is in the balance—how do we create a just world on a safe planet? A groundbreaking paper has just been published in The Lancet Planetary Health by Joyeeta Gupta, Johan Rockström, and their esteemed team at the Earth Commission. This pivotal research highlights the urgent need for sustainable lifestyles, equitable resource distribution, and transformative changes in global politics and economics. The report reveals that the path to a prosperous and equitable future hinges on embracing sustainable lifestyles, undergoing a radical transformation in global politics, and ensuring fair distribution of resources. The study underscores the urgency for action, warning that without immediate change, the dream of a "safe and just space" for humanity might slip away. It's a call for all of us to reconsider our consumption patterns and advocate for policies that prioritise environmental justice and equity. Coordinated by its scientific secretariat hosted by Future Earth, the Earth Commission is at the forefront of advancing these essential discussions. Dear Connections, Here's some insightful sharing that you may find beneficial 🤓 Planetary Health is about the connection between the health of humans and the planet. It focuses on how environmental issues like climate change, pollution, and food systems affect human well-being. The goal is to improve global health by addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable living. It takes a broad approach, combining public health, policy, and economics. Planetary Boundaries, on the other hand, are scientific frameworks that identify the limits within which the Earth can maintain stability. It defines nine key environmental thresholds, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, which we must not exceed to avoid catastrophic changes to the planet. This concept is more focused on the planet itself, using measurable environmental data to guide sustainable practices. In short, Planetary Health is human-centered and looks at the planet’s impact on health, while Planetary Boundaries is planet-centered, focusing on the limits of Earth’s systems to ensure stability for all life. #planetaryhealth #planetaryboundaries #sustainability #ClimateAction #carbonfootprint #NetZero #ClimateEmergency #SDG #ESG #GHG #netzero

"To secure a livable future, each of us needs to ask ourselves: how can I best contribute at this crucial moment in human history?" Far more scientists believe that environmental activism matters much more than advances in technology. Just because technology makes you money or helps you advance your career, does not make it the right thing to do. "Climate change is an existential threat to humanity." "Most respondents (83%) in the survey say they are worried "quite a bit" or "a great deal" about climate change. The vast majority (91%) of them believe that fundamental changes in social, political and economic systems are needed to truly tackle climate change. Most respondents (84%) also think that significant changes in personal behavior and lifestyle are needed." https://lnkd.in/eTQc7YQi Degrowth is the only hope.
