Those from refugee communities are often seen as a burden on society, but they are actually the backbone of the language services industry. As someone who fled the war-torn former Yugoslavia in the 90s, I've seen firsthand the incredible strength and resilience of those from refugee communities. Working with them, I’ve witnessed their dedication to bridging language barriers and fostering communication within their communities. 👉 Here’s why those from refugee communities who become interpreters and translators are indispensable: 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: They provide authentic voices that enrich our cultural understanding. 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: They ensure essential information is accessible, from healthcare to legal services. How well do #Ukrainians speak #English? The results of the #survey of #migration intentions of #Ukrainians conducted by Terra Ukraine in cooperation with Gradus Research showed that about half of the #respondents (46%) assess their level of English as basic. In turn, 24% say they have an intermediate level. The above-average level is rated by 7%, and fluency by 4%. 16% of respondents do not speak English at all. Helping someone you don't know, a stranger, now why would you do that? From personal experience I can tell you that it is the most rewarding and uplifting thing you can do for yourself. Yes, helping someone else, but really making yourself feel great at the same time. It's been over a year since I sponsored Max, a refugee from Ukraine. When I first met Max he didn't speak any english and we had a translator along with Google Translate handy when we got together. Shortly after, it was just me, Max, his girlfriend, also a Ukrainian refugee and of course our best friend Google Translate meeting regularly to practice english and get to know one another. I realized when Max's english had improved substantially when he started to use sarcasm and tease me. This young man has wit! And such a hard worker. Both he and his girlfriend got jobs, working to make a better life for themselves. Not handouts, but lifting hands to get them going. One of the biggest barriers refugees have when coming to the US and looking for employment is not being fluent in english and the second is not having a built in network. You know you can help, right? Even if you think you are too busy, your heart is big and will only expand to accomodate bringing new people into your life. You can ask in your community about new immigrants, refugees you can meet with, invite them for a meal, meet for coffee to practice english. Yes, it's that simple. You will feel so great. Localization and the Grand Bargain 2. Charter for Change 3. Advocacy and Influencing 4. Theory of Change and Theory of Action Session Facilitators Esreal Thembo Mutesi Iyvet Achievements - 23 representatives from sector lead organizations and sector working teams were present. - KRLON facilitated the meeting with refreshments. - Members appreciated the facilitators' presentations. Challenges - KRLON was unable to provide transport refunds, particularly affecting participants with disabilities who attended in person. - Low turnout and many stakeholders did not receive the message about the session. - Time constraints hindered comprehensive understanding of the topics by the members. Recommendations 1. Reserve some resources to support training participants in disseminating information from the training to on-ground actors. 2. Provide facilitation for trainers and training aid materials like books and pens to support local actors in writing down the concepts in their own understanding after interpretation services. This report provides a summary of the capacity strengthening feedback session, highlighting key discussion points, achievements, challenges faced and recommendations for future improvements.

The escalating global crises’ today highlight the profound importance of RISE and our programs. These humanitarian emergencies translate to an increasing demand for our services with more than 1,100 refugees resettling in Onondaga County alone in 2023.  After being displaced and losing so much control in their lives, many immigrants and refugees we serve face language barriers that undermine their confidence and sense of independence. At RISE, we want our clients to speak for themselves. This is why we offer free English language classes for adults, serving over 80 students with translators in Dari, Ukrainian, and more. These classes have empowered our students, giving them confidence in day-to-day conversations such as going to the doctor's office or grocery shopping.
