Recently, my sister-in-law hosted a wreath-making party. I'd never made a wreath and showed up to find over 25 attendees—most of whom she didn't know and also had never done this. Here are my key takeaways from the experience 1. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭: It was inspiring to see that even those who had never made a wreath before were channeling their creativity to craft something unique that resonated with them. 2. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: There was no such thing as a bad wreath! I approached the event without a game plan, embracing the idea of “let’s try this and see where it takes me.” It was refreshing to participate in something with no expectations. 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Engaging with people you’ve never met is something we all need to do more often. The person sitting next to me was a sports fan who encouraged me to experiment with different pieces of greenery and complimented my wreath as it became fuller. The Fail Forward Project is one that is both exciting and scary. Scary because we don't talk about failure enough. Failure is taboo. We do everything we can to avoid experiencing it or talking about it. Even when it is mentioned, it's spun as this one-dimensional event that eventually led to some kind of success, and the success itself takes center stage. And yes, while failure can be, and often is, the catalyst behind many successes, we hardly sit with it long enough to do it justice. This project aims to give us the space to do just that. Come, let's unpack failure in all it's dimensions. Let's discuss the different ways we define it and myriad feelings associated with it: the fear, the disappointment, and the uncertainty. I'm excited about this project because it allows us destigmatize failure and appreciate it as a vital part of the learning process. By listening to the stories of other human beings who botched something (or thought they did), we build resilience for when we inevitably face our own failures. If you can make it, come to the inaugural Fail Forward event, listen to incredible stories, and share yours too. Your story could be just the thing someone else needs to hear to let them know they are going to be OK. I'm looking forward to attending and hope you will too.
