Last week, The University of Bonn, EUREC Office - European Network of Research Ethics Committees, EARMA, and VUmc School of Medical Sciences teams of the #RE4GREEN consortium convened for a joint meeting of the irecs EU project and EUREC Office - European Network of Research Ethics Committees network hosted by Vilniaus universitetas / Vilnius University. The National Department of Health (NDoH) has released the 2024 3rd Edition of the South African Ethics in Health Research Guidelines: Principles, Processes, and Structures. These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework to ensure that health research in South Africa is conducted responsibly and ethically. Key highlights include: Core Ethical Principles: Respect, scientific merit and integrity, justice, care, and beneficence. This applies to all scientific scientific research involving living persons and animals. Replace the 2015 edition. Minimum national benchmark of norms and standards for responsible and ethical research. Detailed guidance on ethics review processes, specific research topics, and methodologies. Stakeholders: Aimed at researchers from all disciplines, Research Ethics Committees (RECs), healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and community representatives. We are delighted to announce the contribution of a number of our Steering Committee members in the recently published book, titled “Research Ethics in Epidemics and Pandemics: A Casebook. Associate Professor Dr. Sharon Kaur and Professor Dr. Phaikyeong Cheah co-authored a chapter and Dr. Teck Chuan Voo played the role as co-author and editor. The Casebook is the first comprehensive resource focusing on complex real-world cases and ethical issues specifically in the context of epidemics and pandemics. It aims to be of value to a range of academic and professional audiences with an interest in research ethics, epidemics and pandemics, and global health. Topics addressed include prioritising and de-prioritising research; adapting research and research procedures; accelerating ethical and regulatory review processes; reporting research findings and sharing data; and ethics review challenges.
