Spotify Wrapped 2024 - dumb move. Let me explain... 🎧👀 It’s all been said and done about Spotify Wrapped 2024, but the more I think about it, the more it feels like the perfect example of a company taking the soul out of an initially great idea. It’s still the Wrapped we music-obsessed fans anticipate each year, but this time, it felt dull—missing that spark, that magic we loved before. Maybe there’s a lesson here for tech companies: don’t sacrifice your authentic DNA for short-term gains because the long-term cost can be far greater than expected. 🙃 Now, I can’t help but hear Noga Erez’s Dumb in my head—this whole thing just feels, well, dumb… #wrapped #spotify #flop

Spotify Wrapped had fans buzzing this year with teasers and a later-than-usual launch that built massive anticipation. But when the final product dropped, it didn’t live up to the hype. Many users were underwhelmed, noting fewer features and less robust data than past years. The outcome? Disappointment and backlash. By creating extra anticipation without delivering a stronger product, Spotify turned excitement into frustration. It’s a reminder for marketers: when you raise expectations, make sure the final execution meets or exceeds them. Over-promising without follow-through risks leaving your audience feeling let down, no matter how beloved your brand might be.

The second episode of The Pricing Weekly has just been released. This time the topic is Spotify's price hike for the U.S. market, and the second price hike in just under a year, the move indicates a shift in their pricing strategy. Before this year, they hadn't raised their price for premium plans in over 10 years. Spotify also has only been profitable a few quarters in the entire 18 years the platform has been in business, but this year that promises to change. First they laid off 17% of their workers, which places them on a more substantial financial footing. Now, they have starting raising prices, which may be the only way they can generate long-term profit. Why are prices the way? First, the market may be nearing saturation for subscriber growth. Also, there isn't much room to cut costs on paying musicians - Spotify is already pretty close to the bottom of the barrel. The strategy seems to be paying off. In Q1 2024, the platform turned its largest quarterly gross profit, and maintained subscription growth through H2 2023. With customer stickiness, it's not expected that the relatively small increase will not impact retention.
