I make pancakes every Sunday. I look forward to it. At this point it is more than a habit. It's a ritual. Rituals are so powerful. For us individually and for our teams. Rituals ground us. They provide stability. No matter how crazy my week is, I know I am having pancakes on Sunday. :) They bring focus and efficiency by creating clarity. I don't need to figure out what to eat on Sunday. They build team culture. Rituals unite us and bring us together. If you're at my house Sunday morning, you're having pancakes too. Not only magicians make magic As I was about to go through the car wash last week, I was compelled to record this video. I thought about how much I love car washes, and I laughed to myself. I then started to think about other little things that bring me joy and how people working in the service industry create magic for their customers. When I worked in bars, I used to say that the sound of a bartender shaking a cocktail is the most promising sound on earth. I knew this because that bartender was about to improve the life of a grateful guest. At my local cafe, the sound of the barista steaming milk brings a smile to my face. I live up the street from a coffee roaster, and the smell of roasting coffee beans wafts through the village and into my home. It’s hypnotizing....and I don’t even drink coffee! I immediately get an adrenaline rush when I walk into my local bike shop, completely transfixed by the rows of bikes on display and the smell of tire rubber. I am beyond grateful for the people behind each of these joys. If you need a boost, include joyful things in your routine. And if you serve customers, keep in mind that you have the power to significantly improve someone’s life, one “insignificant” moment at a time. 🔸 Let’s help narrow the gap between your goals and your ability to achieve them. STORYTIME: Just when you think the little things you do in life fade away, someone reminds you of the ripple effects. A friend (also my favorite ex) shared that he and our mutual friend Ann are now working together at the Belasco Theatre. Ann recently shared one of my best practices, back when I used to bartend—that she still uses, sharing: “…And this is where JMM taught me about the saying ‘…aaand now we add a little love on top!’” Friends— This was more than a decade ago!! 🥹🥹 So, Back when I was bartending, I’d mix a cocktail, and finish by adding a little extra swirl of liquor on top, right in front of the customer. It wasn’t just a pour—it was a gesture, a little moment to make the customer feel special. And you know what? It worked! Sure, They tipped more, but it was more about creating a connection. It often made them want to come back because they knew they would be taken care of, and treated like a friend whenever I was behind the bar. The fact that Ann remembers this—still uses it, and shares that story of my days training behind the bar—is beyond humbling. Customer service is so important to me, because giving people a memorable experience, creating connections, lifting spirits, and investing in people is what’s creates a cycle of harmony and long lasting relationships. This is what we need more of in general! (Or it could be my people pleasing 😂) Hearing this was such a sweet reminder that the small, intentional things we do can leave a mark long after we move on. Thank you, Ann and Scott, for carrying that love with you.
