Leonardo Madio, Martin Quinn, Content moderation and advertising in social media platforms, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, 2024 Abstract We study the incentive of an ad‐funded social media platform to curb the presence of unsafe content that entails reputational risk to advertisers. We identify conditions for the platform not to moderate unsafe content and demonstrate how the optimal moderation policy depends on the risk the advertisers face. The platform is likely to undermoderate unsafe content relative to the socially desirable level when both advertisers and users have congruent preferences for unsafe content and to overmoderate unsafe content when advertisers have conflicting preferences for unsafe content. Finally, to mitigate negative externalities generated by unsafe content, we study the implications of a policy that mandates binding content moderation to online platforms and how the introduction of taxes on social media activity and social media platform competition can distort the platform's moderation strategies. Worrying figures and change required to push more advertising toward brand suitable environments in quality journalism reaching engaged users. Blanket keyword block lists are a thing of the past with semantic technology which understands the context of words on a page. Brand suitability should be bespoke to every advertiser and all stakeholders should have sight of what that it looks like, what is designed to do, and how it won't unneccessarily block brand suitable environments.

Quality matters... I've said it before, it's not good enough to just post content. We all do it anyway, but who reads this stuff? Maybe in the past people read it. But today, every day, we generate around 400 million terabytes of data. That means every two days, we generate as much information as we did between the dawn of civilization up until 2003 (according to Eric Schmidt). So how can we make our content stand out. There are plenty of levers. Innovative marketing Effective distribution Paid ads? Exciting and engaging content (obviously) The key for me though is exceptional quality. It's no longer enough to just post. Our content needs to be technically well produced to the highest standard to even stand a chance out there. We've had years of 'anything goes'. A whole generation watch Big Brother on TV and news broadcasts that consisted of "oh, we seem to have lost them...". But those days are gone. I'm going to say it. AT LAST, the age of quality content is back!

So much of social media “management” now is market research and trend research (and research in general) to see what is performing well on platforms. This can easily add up to over 10 hours a month of research alone. But if you rewind five or so years, I could’ve managed one single account for 10 hours a month total. Times have changed & we are in a new era of marketing, and mediocre content does not work. So if you’re wondering why social media marketer’s prices have gone up, that’s why. #marketing #socialmediamanagement #socialmediastrategist
