We created our AI & #UXResearch event on a whim last year, and it turned out to be our most watched livestream of 2023/24 😱 Once you take a look at the speakers, it's not hard to see why. We had a half-dozen research leaders who've been working on AI UXR since before it was cool and we learned *a lot* 🟣 Dr. Ricardo Prada gave us the AI history lesson we didn't know we needed 🟣 Sheana Ahlqvist, PhD taught us how we'll need to create new research methods for AI produts 🟣 Lisa Nash showed us how UXR can be instrumental to the engineering work that goes into developing AI systems 🟣 Jessa Anderson, PhD gave us a rundown on a key framework to evaluate AI-powered product experiences and... 🟣 Pete Fleming sat down we me for a fireside chat to answer all our big questions about the future of AI and UX research. Should we maybe to an AI & UXR 2.0 this year? Have we maybe already booked a venue and some speakers? I'll never tell 🤫 (until October). To check out all these talks and more: 📺 Watch them on Youtube: https://lnkd.in/gF2Gzkt4 🍎 Listen to them on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/gEC-eZ7U 🎧 Or on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gXUDfPSp

The Spoken truth about AI integration by MD's:
I had Spencer on the podcast. He's a Vice Chair and Professor of Medicine at UNC. He's also a great writer on LinkedIn about the intersection of healthcare and AI. Here are some of my key takeaways: -Misaligned Incentives for AI Adoption: Spencer pointed out a lack of clear incentives for healthcare practitioners to adopt AI. Unlike previous shifts, like EMR adoption incentivized by the government, providers have no direct financial motivation to integrate AI. AI tools often come with costs but no immediate reimbursement or clear return on investment. Why would a doctor want to use this or be an early adopter? -The Human-in-the-Loop Fallacy: Spencer questioned the effectiveness of having a human review of AI outputs. He noted that humans often become complacent in repetitive tasks. We chatted through the classic example of TSA agent's inability to catch water bottles vs fake weapons. I thought this was a clever reminder that "human in the loop" does not mean it's better; it could mean it's worse. -Specialization in the Age of AI: We discussed how increasing medical knowledge has led to more specialization throughout history. Spencer mentioned that AI could push this trend in two ways: it might enable further specialization by uncovering new patterns or democratize specialized knowledge, making it more accessible to generalists. Both will likely happen. -Current Use Cases in Healthcare: Spencer noted that AI in healthcare is mainly focused on administrative tasks, such as automated note-writing, patient messaging, and coding/billing. The emphasis is on using AI for less risky tasks, away from direct clinical decision-making. -Gradual Adoption: Spencer predicts a gradual integration of AI in healthcare rather than a sudden shift. He expects AI tools to be adopted piecemeal, starting with those that create value in specific contexts. I had a ton of fun with him on the podcast! Let me know what you think of this. Spencer is your person if you're thinking through the intersection of healthcare and AI.

I love to hear testaments to how open athenahealth is for developers. In this podcast we hear from our new partner, Suki’s founder, Punit Singh Soni about their greatest challenge to expansion and how their EHR partners can be a propel their technology or prevent it. “In our case, we actually don't read from it, we write to it, which is even harder because the system or record still is the EHR. And some EHRs tend to be easy. In my opinion, Athena is super easy. We have partners like Elation Health who are being very helpful. Epic and Cerner Corporation have been better and have had the right kind of systems that we can use, but are not complete. But others are impossible.” From Faces Of Digital Health Podcast: NLP in Healthcare 2/3: The Power of Voice and NLP for Medical Practice Optimization (Punit Singh Soni, Suki), Jan 12, 2023 https://lnkd.in/gumF3Yec This material may be protected by copyright.
