#CDHAlert | In today's alert, Phetheni Nkuna (LLM, MBA), Thato Makoaba and Khutso Mongadi discuss a new era for traditional healers: A step towards formalisation and regulation. The Traditional Health Professional Regulations, 2024 (Regulations) were published in the Government Gazette for comment on 21 June 2024. The Regulations aim to formalise and professionalise traditional health practices in South Africa and are set to be implemented under the Traditional Health Practitioners Act 22 of 2007 (THPA). Under the new framework, traditional healers will no longer be operating in a legal grey area. Once registered with the Interim Traditional Health Practitioners Council of South Africa (Council), practitioners will be officially recognised as traditional health practitioners. In accordance with the Regulations, medical certificates from traditional healers will only be legally recognised if the healer is registered with the Council and meets the requirements set out in THPA. While the THPA has been in existence since 2007, the Regulations are the key to bringing the act into full operation, with an emphasis on establishing clear guidelines for those seeking to practice traditional health. [ANNOUNCEMENT] - Draft Traditional Health Practitioners Regulations 2024 Submission The struggle for recognition of Indigenous knowledge systems in South Africa is not merely a matter of cultural preservation; it's a battle for the very soul of our national identity. At the Institute for iCamagu Professions of South Africa (IPROSA), we champion the Camagu Indigenous Knowledge System (C-IKS), a rich tapestry of traditional health practices, cultural rituals, and bioeconomic wisdom. Yet, this invaluable heritage faces an existential threat from a regulatory landscape that remains stubbornly rooted in colonial mindsets. #IPROSA, which is our legal and policy division, has made a submission to strengthen regulation and implementation of the Traditional Health Practitioners Regulations (published on 21 June 2024), in line with our mandate to create an enabling economy indigenous practitioners and their communities can operate harmoniously with the law. Is #healthcare_regulated in Ethiopia? Let's examine the laws and practices surrounding the commercialization of healthcare. Recently, we've seen increasingly attractive but heavily commercialized advertisements, particularly on social media. Personally, I wonder how our medical advertisements will evolve with the introduction of new and innovative interventions [የሰልባጅ salvage ተራ ዓይነት፣ "የኩላሊት፣ የጉበት.... ምናምን ጨረታ የምናይ ሁሉ ይመስለኛል 😇] Ethiopian law explicitly requires that advertisements for medical services must receive written #permission from the relevant governmental authority before being disseminated. If permission is granted, the advertisement must comply with several regulations. It must not directly or indirectly encourage the unnecessary use of health services, nor should it negatively impact or undermine other health professionals and services. Additionally, advertisements are prohibited from emphasizing personal qualities or superior knowledge. It is also unlawful to promote discounts or other incentives intended to attract individuals to use the service. Let's disregard the legal aspect for a moment. The new institutions using these types of notorious advertisements seem to be forsaking common morality and ethics in pursuit of quick financial gain, even though there is still a strong demand for their services. As they aggressively try to enter the market, the regulators, whom we frequently see on our screens, appear to be nowhere in sight 😂.

Here is a thought piece from my colleague Benon Kalangari Tumwine and I on how optimizing performance of private wings in public health facilities potentially reduces the adverse effects of an ever tightening fiscal space and a shifting donor-aid landscape. Domestication of resources to finance health programmes for improved population heath has recently emerged as a top strategic priority in fragile and resource constrained health systems. #USAID #KPMG #Palladium #LSEDepartmentofHealthPolicy #ACCA #EdinburghBusinessSchool #HealthSystems #MinistryofHealthUganda #WorldHealthOrganisation

The 65th National Council on Health (NCH), hosted by Borno State, brought together key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s health sector. Over the course of the week, delegates engaged in extensive deliberations on critical memos to ensure that the nation’s health policies are well-aligned, evidence-based, and actionable at all levels of governance. Key topics included strategies for strengthening primary healthcare, enhancing health system resilience, & addressing emerging public health challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, epidemic preparedness, and the integration of digital health solutions. These discussions aim to not only accelerate progress toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030 but also to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare services for all Nigerians, regardless of location or socioeconomic status. Good morning, everyone! Feeling well? Today I am actually SEEING MY DOCTOR, so this news is of particular interest to me… but what about all South Africans feeling a little under the weather, or perhaps you are a person who treats such people? Yesterday, the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria ruled that the requirement for #healthcarepractitioners to obtain a "certificate of need" before practicing in specific areas is unconstitutional. This ruling is significant as the certificate of need scheme is a central component of the proposed new #NationalHealthInsurance (NHI) system, which by now, we all know is law. The decision was prompted by an application from various #healthcare groups and trade unions, including #Solidarity, arguing that the certificate of need requirement infringes upon several constitutional rights such as #humandignity, #freedom of movement, and the right to access healthcare. LAW REALLY IS FASCINATING! In his judgment, #JudgeAnthonyMillar highlighted that the certificate of need scheme primarily limits the number of healthcare practitioners and facilities in particular regions, posing a (massive) barrier to entry and continuity of healthcare services. He noted that the scheme criminalizes the operation of healthcare services in areas without an issued certificate and invalidated several sections of the National Health Act that enforce this scheme. This ruling raises questions about the future implementation of the NHI. I believe the NHI was rushed and for political gain. The Department of Health has not yet responded formally to the ruling. Healthcare in South Africa is in a state of crisis. Are parts of the #NHI illegal? #doctors #southafrica #hospitals @solidariteit #news #influences

Earlier today I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Richard Okoye, the Chairman of Savealife Group. I remember when I use to watch him speak about health on the Nigerian local television networks. The sum about health that I know today was partly instilled by this visionary man🎓. Today, he's one of a handful of Nigerian health care professionals that are piloting the Nigerian health sector. He has developed several health care technologies that are unique to the Nigerian people (especially the elderly ones)🔆. He's one of the few that clamor about making personal health a priority. I agree with him when he says that "there is no wealth without good health". This particularly got stuck with me because, in Nigeria today, it's very easy to overlook one's health to chase wealth due to the kind of economic downturn plaguing her😞. Dear professionals, your health determines the level of impact that you bring to your chosen industry or field💡. Choose personal health today🚀! #savealife #healthcare #dataanalytics #savealifefoundation #healthsector #healthtalk #professionals #foundation #personalhealth #mentalhealth

15,000-16,000 Doctors have Japa-ed from Nigeria!! What is happening? 📍In the past five years, this number of Doctors have fled from Nigeria, do you know what that means? ➖According to World Health Organization , the doctor-to-patient ratio is 1:1000 ➖Meaning that the standard is one doctor to a thousand patient 📍But see what we're doing in Nigeria; ➖We have about 55,000 Doctors ➖We have about 230 Million People ✳️Here's the calculation 230,000,000 ------------------ =4,182 55,000 📍That means a Nigerian Doctor will have to attend to 4,182 people/patient. Meanwhile World Health Organization said 1000. ➖We're saying 55, 000 Doctors are not enough and 15,000 are still leaving. It keeps getting worse by the day ➖These Doctors are overworked, undervalued and underpaid. Why won't they leave? ➖Imagine there are emergencies but few doctors on seat, you mean to tell me that some of the casualties will die? 📍The government noticed this brain drain/Japa trend, you know what they did? ➖They proposed a bill saying "Medical graduates should work for five years in Nigeria before obtaining full license to practice". ➖ It's just a way to keep them here but what happens after the five years?! ➖I understand the idea behind this bill but I don't think it's the best. Don't address issues on surface level!! 📍Pathetically, it's not just happening with Doctors. Technocrats, Professors, Plumbers etc are leaving!! ✳️These issues have to be addressed and with a sense of urgency and sensibility. If not.. If the professionals japa, who will be left? Unskilled and old people? Can they manage the country? Let me know your thoughts on this, I'll be taking notes 📝 I'm Divine CHUKWUEMEKA 💫 A Migration Researcher 🧑🏫 The Japa Queen 👸
