The European Union and its governance arrangements stand out from other regions of the world in a number of different ways. Perhaps one of the most visible differences in governance which sets the EU apart from other regions of the world is the extent to which a core EU value- that of gender equality- has resulted in women now occupying many of the most senior and powerful roles at EU level. The picture below shows Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank congratulating Roberta Metsola on being re- elected as the President of the European Parliament. This week will also decide whether the high- profile Ursula Von Der Leyen will be reappointed as President of the European Commission. The healthy representation of female leaders at the head of EU institutions iis in stark comparison with the exclusively male governance structures of other global powers. For example, the powerful Chinese Politburo is composed exclusively of men and the Chinese National People’s Congress is almost completely male in composition. Based on , Donald Trump’s recent announcement of his appointment of another white male ( JD Vance) as his Vice President if he is elected US Presidebt in November this year, it is clear that women have more opportunity in the EU than anywhere else in the world to exercise their leadership skills, and to influence important policy and decision- making processes. . This is called “ walking the talk” and demonstrates the commitment of the EU to creating opportunities for the leadership abilities of women to shine! It is clear to me that where women are concerned at the moment, the EU is the certainly the best place on the planet to live and to work.
