Decarbonizing the built environment is vital to staving off global warming. For example, buildings contribute nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions yet less than 15% of commercial buildings in the US use heat pumps, a technology that can dramatically speed the path to net-zero buildings. I’m excited that Johnson Controls, along with other leading rooftop manufacturers, is participating in the DOE’s accelerator program to drive the development of cold climate rooftop heat pumps to address this obvious need in the market. #Sustainability #NetZero #SmartBuildings #JohnsonControls

Check out my new blog. It’s about a new EPA rule that effectively bans the current standard refrigerant for home air conditioners and heat pumps, starting New Year’s Day, 2025. The industry will be replacing that banned refrigerant with two new climate friendlier refrigerants in newly manufactured equipment. If you’re not in the market for new equipment, you may be wondering why you need to know about this new rule. Maybe you don’t even know what refrigerant is in your current air conditioner. There are several reasons why this change is unprecedented in the domestic air conditioning market and It’s going to be the subject of much confusion and misinformation. If you’re connected to me on LinkedIn, I expect your friends and relatives will be turning to you for advice. One issue that’s bound to come up is that the new climate-friendlier refrigerants are slightly flammable. In order to contribute less to climate change, these refrigerants have to break down quickly in the atmosphere, and that characteristic tends to make chemicals flammable. Their flammability is so low that when combined with new safety features required by building codes, they are unlikely to jeopardize anyone’s health or property. Since the domestic air conditioning industry has only used nonflammable refrigerants over the course of of its 90 year history, it’s understandable some folks will be anxious about using equipment charged with slightly flammable refrigerants. It’s also likely that there will be attempts to disseminate misinformation that take advantage of that anxiety to undermine climate change mitigation policies. To learn more about these new refrigerants, and how you can be a voice of calm and reason in the face of the communication maelstrom that surrounds climate change mitigation policy, please read my post. ❄ World Refrigeration Day® incorporating World Heatpumps Day is a day to celebrate the important role that #cooling plays in our lives, especially in a warming climate. As someone who has learned a lot about cooling and #refrigeration through my work with the Cool Up programme, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. ❄ Cooling is essential for preserving food, medicine, and other perishable goods, as well as for creating comfortable living and working environments. However, traditional cooling methods can have a negative impact on the environment, contributing to climate change and #ozonedepletion. That's why it's so important to explore alternative, more #SustainableCooling solutions. Through the Cool Up programme, I have learned about the benefits of #EnergyEfficient cooling appliances and #NaturalRefrigerants, which have low or no global warming potential. By using EE equipment and natural refrigerants, we can reduce our carbon footprint and help protect the environment. ❄ On this #WorldRefrigerationDay, let's take a moment to appreciate the importance of cooling in our lives, and to explore ways to make it more sustainable. If you're interested in learning more about natural refrigerants and sustainable cooling solutions, check out the Cool Up programme knowledge base & be sure to sign up for our newsletter!
