“A combination of two strategies could actually solve the #climatecrisis -- and at a #profit.” On a red-eye flight to #SaudiArabia, Hunter Lovins reflects that COP16Riyadh could make real progress though COP29 Azerbaijan failed just weeks ago. Why? Because COP16’s mission “to address the urgent global crises of land degradation, #drought and #desertification” might alert enough people that if adopted globally, #regenerativeagriculture could sequester literally *all* the #carbon generated by human activity. The #science is real. See Hunter’s latest in our on-the-ground series, Dispatch from COP. 🌍 Today, COP29 kicks off in Baku, and while all eyes are on the “transition away” from fossil fuels, let’s remember that the climate crisis is far bigger than just CO₂. This year’s summit is a critical moment for climate finance and justice, aiming to support global adaptation efforts and communities already feeling the impact of climate change. Deforestation, biodiversity loss, ocean health, water scarcity, and overconsumption are all intertwined in our shared challenge. Real climate action means addressing them together, not just in pieces. Let’s hope for commitments that prioritize every aspect of our environment. It’s COP season and it’s crunch time - why wolves and the climate have more in common than you think The world has descended on Columbia for Cop16, full of promises, projects, roadmaps, targets, commitments, objectives, hope and hot air against a backdrop of heatwaves, worsening droughts, wilder weather, wildfires, wildlife extinctions, water stress, land clearance and climate disruption. Wealthy western countries have sent delegations to preach, promise and pontificate while back home their biodiversity dwindles and iconic, supposedly protected species are shot and culled. Apex predators are in the crosshairs and forests are being felled faster than you can say biomass, yet the west continues to abuse nature and guzzle Earth's resources while claiming the moral high ground. More copping out will follow at Cop29, in Azerbaijan, a country that has weakened its climate targets and is doubling down on fossil fuel extraction to feed our overconsumption. While none of the biodiversity or climate targets we have set ourselves have ever been met, you can bet more will spew forth from Cali and Baku. Cop15 pledged to set aside 30x30% of land and seas for nature by 2030. We are inching painfully towards 17.5% and 8.4% respectively and a recent survey damningly revealed that biodiversity is declining even faster in protected areas than outside them. As for “keeping 1.5 alive, only 6% of the world’s leading climate scientists believe this goal is still attainable; 77% think we're heading for at least 2.5°C and almost half believe warming will top 3°C. At 1.2°C above the preindustrial average, our oceans have already absorbed 90% of warming and last year, the hottest ever recorded, the world’s forests, plants and soil, absorbed almost no carbon. While the political will to address these problems is lacking, economic interests and disinformation aren’t. Political posturing permeates the world of wolves and temperature increases. One is a political animal, the other is a political game. Science has been sidelined. But culling keystone apex predators, as Europe is currently and hypocritically doing, weakens resilience just as surely as pumping greenhouses gases into the atmosphere. The mass shooting of wolves, bears and lynx can cascade down food chains sending shockwaves reverberating through ecosystems. Likewise, climate shocks can ripple through our connected global societies, triggering migration, food price hikes and conflicts over dwindling resources. But hope just like promises and oil wells, spring eternal. And maybe this is the problem. Hope leads to unwarranted optimism and complacency. Worse, it can encourage risk rather than responsibility. It is easy to sign treaties and set targets, but much harder to abide by and reach them. What is needed now are social tipping points where small changes in society trigger large-scale climate and biodiversity action. Reaching net zero is impossible without nature. We must act now.

The UN Climate Change Conference, COP29 is fast approaching. With global efforts to tackle climate change falling short https://lnkd.in/e7UjtdSd, this year’s event in Baku, Azerbaijan, focuses on how to ‘enhance ambition and enable action.’ https://cop29.az/en Bold steps are required worldwide to combat the climate crisis across industries and sectors. That’s why we’re making it our mission to research and develop sustainable minerals solutions to support a variety of carbon reduction measures. Operating in the new, and rapidly growing, sustainable material management field, we’re advancing a suite of sustainable solutions for industrial applications as well as green construction products and Biodiversity Net Gain projects. COP29 is a special one. It sets the stage for two critical agendas, starting 2025. One: push Climate Finance beyond the $100 million-mark that was set earlier, and two, set further stretch targets on Emission Reduction by countries, in their new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). 🌍💰🌱 Jayati Talapatra writes on why COP 29 matters. Yesterday, three headlines broke in the Guardian, together summarising the mountain that nations need to overcome at COP29 next week to resolve the climate crisis. 1) “Essential to act now to prevent chaotic climate breakdown, warns UN chief” A pretty clear warning from the UN… 2) “A total waste of time: why Papua New Guinea pulled out of Cop29 and why climate advocates are worried” A nation most impacted by climate change are claiming big-emitting countries have not done enough to take meaningful climate action. 3) “COP29 CEO filmed agreeing to facilitate fossil fuel deals at climate summit” Despite the COP28 agreement to transition away from fossil fuel, COP29 may be being used to do discuss fossil fuel deals. Close your eyes 🫣, cross your fingers 🤞, and hope for a commitment to phase out fossil fuels and provide the finance required for the transition 🌎🌍🌏. What is happening at Cop29 … This year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (CoP29) has been called “the finance CoP”. The main goal of CoP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan is to scale up climate finance. Climate funding is aimed at helping lower income countries adapt to the effects of climate change, and reduce climate disasters such as floods, droughts and wildfires. Funding is also needed to grow economies, and help transition to zero-carbon economies. Trillions of dollars are needed to reach these goals. Why our experts are there Five of EIA’s Climate experts are attending CoP29. Our experts are advocating for the reduction of emissions that are depleting the ozone layer and heating the planet, including methane, fluorinated gases, N2O and HFCs, as well as fossil fuels. Climate change is the greatest threat humanity faces today and EIA is dedicated to addressing those greenhouse gases and ozone depleting gases that are most harmful to our planet. Follow EIA for updates as we work to protect our planet from runaway climate change. #eia #cop29 #azerbaijan #climatechange #climatecrisis #flood #drought #wildfire #methane #co2 #fossilfuels #n20 #hfc

Earlier this week, COP29 kicked off in Azerbaijan. As one of the most important UN-backed climate change initiatives, the event attracted world leaders, climate change experts and industry bigwigs. And what was the common issue taking centre stage? 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞💰 "You see, dealing with global warming and its overflow effects isn’t cheap. [T]rillions of dollars are needed if countries want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, and protect lives and livelihoods in the process." The finance problem exists at every level, not just the global. 🚫In fact, cost is the biggest obstacle currently preventing SMEs from investing in their own energy transitions. It's also the problem that Smart Ease was created to solve. Our mission is to enable as many businesses and organisations as possible to invest in energy-efficiency equipment through affordable, ZERO upfront Payment Plans. The 1.5°C target set in #Paris in 2015 was only possible if the nations of the world all worked together to significantly reduce #greenhousegasemissions. But, of course, they didn’t. They focused instead on building military weapons and extracting more #oilandgas from more places. In other words, they did exactly the opposite of what they needed to do to protect humanity from an environment that will be savagely hotter as temperature increases occur. The signs are everywhere. The #FloridaKeys are underwater much of the time at #hightide. Powerful #typhoons and #hurricanes are ravaging many parts off the world. The #SaharaDesert is #flooding, while there is not enough water in the #PanamaCanal to float the largest cargo ships. On October 24, 2024, the #UnitedNations issued its Emissions Gap Report, which finds that nations must deliver dramatically stronger ambition and action in the next round of nationally determined contributions or the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal will be gone within a few years. What are nationally determined contributions? According to #Wikipedia, they are commitments that countries make to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions as part of climate change mitigation. These commitments include the necessary policies and measures for achieving the global targets set out in the #ParisAgreement. Global Average Temperature Continues To Rise Annual greenhouse gas emissions are at an all-time high and going up rather than down. Urgent action must be taken to prevent catastrophic spikes in temperature and avoid the worst impact of #climatechange, the #UN report says. In short, countries must start curbing emissions immediately. “Climate crunch time is here,” said Inger Andersen, executive director of the UN Environment Program. “We need global mobilisation on a scale and pace never seen before, starting right now before the next round of climate pledges.” If not, she warned, the 1.5°C goal to cap rising temperatures set in the Paris Agreement on climate change “will soon be dead, and well below two degrees Celsius will take its place in the intensive care unit.” Released at the #COP16 global biodiversity conference in #Cali, #Colombia, the report tracks the gap between where #globalemissions are heading with current country commitmentsand where they ought to be to limit warming to well below 2°C and preferably 1.5°C to meet the intent of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. The report says the 1.5°C goal will be gone within a few years unless nations collectively commit to cut 42 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 57 percent by 2035 in the next round of nationally determined contributions, and back this up with rapid action.

As COP29 Azerbaijan begins, our Chief Executive Josiah Lockhart reflects on how we are working to scale climate action in Scotland, helping individuals and communities overcome barriers to decarbonisation. “At Changeworks our aim is to help people decarbonise their homes. Achieving net zero will require almost everyone across Scotland to retrofit their properties. However, we know that there are significant barriers preventing people from making these changes, and that it’s not quite as straightforward as everyone just needing to ‘do their bit’.” https://lnkd.in/eubq_-tJ #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #ClimateAction #Baku #NetZero #Retrofit #JustTransition #Scotland
