Happy to be part of the team conducting a research on the role of urban forest in climate change mitigation at the Copperbelt University school of Natural Resources. Of course the urban forest plays a role in climate mitigation but in what way, are there urban tree species that capture more carbon than other species or some don't even capture a bit? How well can we run these forests considering the fact that we need infrastructure development in the urban areas? These plus more questions needs to be answered and there is need for more research, more mitigation & adaptation action, and less of the empty talks... #ClimateAction #Climate_Change_Research

We were invited to present at the Legislative Council Environment and Planning Inquiry into Climate Resilience in Traralgon on Tuesday, with Mayor Cr Tom Crook (pictured) and General Manager Assets and Environment Stuart McConnell telling the inquiry that there is critical work to be done, and local government needs support. East Gippsland knows and is experiencing the impacts of climate change, and we are keen to work with all levels of government to strengthen our approach. If we do not invest in preparing for the impacts of climate change, our communities will be impacted more significantly and for longer by climate related events – delaying recovery, increasing the need for support and increasing economic and other impacts. Our recent issue of City Research Insights (CRI) reports on an action research project that works to support evidence-based climate resilience in Southeast Asia, where policies tend to focus on climate-proofing infrastructures and frame climate as a technical problem, and where policymakers report a lack of expertise on how to apply climate resilience knowledge that incorporates social vulnerability concepts. 🌍 The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US 🇺🇸 has unveiled its Equitable Climate Services Action Plan to make climate data and tools more accessible to all, especially underserved communities. “Our goal is to ensure all communities have the resources needed to thrive in a changing climate,” said NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad. This initiative is a vital step towards creating a 🌱 Climate-Ready Nation. This is something we should have in Canada too! QUESTION: Does anyone know if we have a similar plan in Canada to ensure equal access to climate data and adaptation information? 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 #ClimateAction #Equity #Resilience 🌿

Reimagining Urban Futures: A Milestone IPCC Scoping Meeting Thrilled to second Diana URGE-VORSATZ’s post on the historic strides we've made at the IPCC scoping meeting for the upcoming report on Climate Change and Cities. As the vice chair of the IPCC and chair of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), Diana, along with the other SSC members, strongly represent commitment to knowledge co-generation. This is a pivotal moment where science meets practice. We're crafting the report's outline hand-in-hand with practitioners and sciebtists, engaging a few high-level urban decision-makers to ensure the knowledge we compile can drive evidence-based climate action in our cities. It is an honor to stand among the dedicated urban practitioners and scientists in Riga. The presence of esteemed colleagues like Debra Roberts, Lea Ranalder, Seth Schultz,Cathy Oke, Risto Veivo, Stina Ellevseth Oseland, Patricia Himschoot, Carolina Urrutia Vásquez, Yann FRANÇOISE, Shannon Miedema epitomizes the spirit of collaboration that is essential to shape sustainable, resilient urban landscapes for the future. #IPCC #CitiesAndClimateChange #Sustainability #UrbanDevelopment #ClimateAction
Vice Chair of the IPCC, Professor at Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, Central European University
a few historic milestones have been reached in our IPCC scoping meeting for our new report on Cities and Climate Change. One of these is that we are walking the talk on knowledge co-generation. For the planning of our cities and climate change special report, we are producing the outline together with the practitioners. We are honored to engage so many high level urban decision-makers in a joint thinking: what knowledge can inform evidence-based climate action in cities. I had the honor of a shot with all urban practitioners with us in Riga! just a few Pourya Salehi, Debra Roberts Seth Schultz Great to have many urban networks also represented, even if it was not possible to have comprehensive due to the limited number of total participants.
