77% better than baseline! Over 900,000 sf of building area. These are impressive AIA 2030 Commitment results! Really close to the (aggressive) current target of 80%. I’m super proud of my colleagues at BRIC, consultant collaborators, and clients. I’ve been doing 2030 reporting for more than 10 years. It’s always complicated to get the numbers right—accurate baselines and predicted energy use. Often frustrating. We know it’s an important way to measure the climate impacts of our work, and our aspirations are high. Progress is rarely linear. Our projects are education buildings for public clients, so this efficiency represents wise long-term investments—financial, healthy learning environments for students, and climate health. There’s still so much more to do—further tracking and reductions in operational (energy) and embodied carbon emissions—but it’s great to be able to take a moment to celebrate this success, this step forward! BRIC Architecture, Inc. Interface Engineering, Inc. PAE Metrix Engineers
The results are in 📢 BRIC is excited to share our 2023 energy results for the #AIA2030Commitment. From day one, the pursuit of sustainable design solutions and climate justice have been two firm-defining elements of BRIC’s practice. As proud members of the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment, we’re excited to report that our 2023 portfolio of work achieved a reduction of 77% from the baseline! In addition to being our best outcome yet, these results reflect the strides our teams are making in partnership with our clients and consultants to align our work with the current national goal of reducing predicted energy use intensity (pEUI) by 80% from the baseline (2003 CBECS). From decreasing climate impacts to reducing operating costs, the tailored solutions we’re co-creating with school districts across the PNW represent our holistic approach to resource stewardship and student wellness. Thank you to all of our collaborators! #K12Design #SchoolDesign #K12Education #EquityInEducation #SustainableDesign #ClimateJustice #DesignForChange #Architecture

In Vancouver this week presenting at the RAIC - IRAC conference on Saturday May 18 with Andrea Lendak. We will be presenting our joint research on Gender-Based Transit design. Women represent the majority of transit riders and experience mobility differently than others. Women are more likely to feel unsafe, more likely to travel with strollers or packages, more likely to assist family or community members, and more likely to experience harassment. Gender-responsive planning, design, monitoring and evaluation can provide a better environment for women and others. Architects and engineers are becoming more aware of this and can use various tools to design and deliver more inclusive and equitable public spaces. This session will look at transit architecture from a woman’s perspective. Using station design case-studies, gender-based analysis, and real-world examples, we will discuss equitable planning and transit design solutions to make these public places more inclusive for everyone. In June, Heads of Sustainability from across the built environment came together to discuss what #RegenerativeDesign means, and how we can move towards a more regenerative built environment. The session was co-convened by The Institution of Structural Engineers and the Chatham House Sustainability Accelerator. It was great to witness such strong consensus as to what the R-word actually means, and I am hopeful that with such agreement, the industry can focus on creating the vast change we need to see. Common threads to our conversations were: 🕸holistic systems thinking; 🗾place-based design; ♻️creating feedback loops; 🌱enabling nature and society to thrive. We concluded that there is a need to create: 🧬a new paradigm valuing life over profit; 📊business models focussed on regenerative outcomes; 🎓new education models at all levels of industry. A couple of years ago I was introduced to the concept of regenerative design and was immediately convinced this is the only way to go. I read all I could on the subject to prepare myself to be able to help make this happen. In the following months we developed a research program idea for establishing a process for implementation of regenerative structures in infrastructure and identified the challenges we needed to overcome. We found a number of inidividuals within our client organisations that wanted to be partners in this regenerative infrastructure program but we struggled to get the funding, everyone just wanted to focus on climate or circularity or biodiversity or livability but not how we could develop methods for system level thinking and regenerative design. Over a year ago together with the Ramboll global sustainability team and key client acciona we deep dived into regenerative infrastructure to develop our own road Map of how regenerative infrastructure could be achieved in projects. In October 2023 we held a regenerative conference for both Ramboll and key clients and shared more experiences and best practices across disciplines and companies. At a Swedish Transport authority organised decarbonisation best practice workshop in October 2023 I presented the need for a paradigm shift towards regenerative design and stop just talking “ carbon footprint” ie stop focusing on doing less harm and focus on doing more good…. Since then we have globally worked on implementing regenerative principles to our projects but we often struggle as regenerative principles are not specified or well understood by our clients. Hence hard to get paid to make the transition that is needed. In June 2024 to help raise awareness we held global webinars in both systems thinking and regenerative design of infrastructure for both Ramboll and key clients. We also have run internal training cross market and developed regenerative tools so more of our staff can become advocates of regenerative design and part of the “how” we achieve the necessary transition. Why am I writing all of this? Because in this 2 year period of passionately pushing regenerative design it has been quite frustrating how hard it has been to get interest from industry to move in a regenerative direction. And the realization It can only happen if we collaboratively make this move, ie we can’t do it on our own. We need a higher awareness and influential advocates. So I was so happy to see this post from the UK institution of structural engineers. That they are on the case and raising awareness on regenerative design of structures and the challenges that need to be overcome 🤩 I would love to see similar initiatives in Sweden, if you are interested in this please reach out and maybe we can collaborate and help make this happen 👊🏻 #letsclosethegap #biodiversity #regenerativedesign #ramboll #paradigmshift #collaboration
