What are the practical realities of integrating ESG factors into the day to day running of an organisation? The panel addressed the practical realities of integrating ESG factors into the day to day running of an organisation with a particular focus on clarity of company purpose, strategy and risk appetite formulation, the range of stakeholder expectations and disclosure requirements. It also spoke about ESG legal and regulatory architecture, such as CSRD and CSDDD, and he role and impact of supply chains. At WBA, we are always encouraged by the power of collaboration, especially with civil society and NGOs. Civil society organisations and academia are amplifying our impact by applying WBA methodologies to companies beyond our benchmark of 2,000, while some NGOs are using our benchmarks as independent monitoring tools. For example, ClientEarth, one of our Allies, is leveraging our ACT methodology in its lawsuit against Shell's Board for failing to address climate risk, highlighting the critical role of our benchmarks in advocating for corporate accountability. Our Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB) is also driving global change. In countries like Kazakhstan, Kenya, and Spain, NGOs are using the CHRB methodology to push for stronger human rights policies. The 12-month initiative, launched in August 2024, represents a significant collaboration between TBLA and one of the UK's leading public sector partnerships. SECP Environmental, Social, and Governance (#ESG) Voluntary Disclosure Guidelines The Securities and Exchange Commission of #Pakistan (SECP) has taken a major stride towards promoting responsible business practices and environmental stewardship with the issuance of #Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) #Voluntary #Disclosure Guidelines for listed companies. Furthermore, amendments in Listed Companies (Code of Corporate Governance) Regulations, 2019 (#Corporate Governance Regulations) have been made to strengthen oversight responsibilities of the board regarding #sustainability priorities.

This week I attended an ESG seminar for GCs organised by MRA Search. Seminars in our profession are a constant thing, almost weekly. This one was notable for two reasons: it was on ESG - a topic of huge importance for the time being and the future, and it was in a beautiful setting in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London. Takeaways? To draw a historical paralell for a problem of the future given the historical setting: in mediaeval times the Lord Chancellor, a member of the clergy and the chief lawyer of the land, acted as the King's conscience. In a modern day setting, the GC /Head of Legal / CLO must be the conscience of the small kingdoms that are the businesses we work for. And whilst there might not be immediate pressure on sustainability, it should be something the in-house lawyer has their strategic sights on to provide the business the leadership it requires on this front to avoid future disappointment or being unprepared.
