"Climate change and the rate of change in particular is probably holding some surprises in terms of the impacts that it has across Australia." - Dr Karl Braganza The State of the Climate report 2024, released by CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology this week, serves as Australia’s biannual report card on climate. It reveals that the country has already warmed by 1.51 degrees since 1910, with ocean temperature rises surprising even scientists. We are already living in a new climate, facing a future that will be hotter, more extreme, and unpredictable. I read the The State of Climate 2024 report and one word came to mind 'GRIM'. 🌿 Yes, we do need data and information to know the potential future we are facing, but we also need to ensure people don't feel that the future is so bad its hardly worth trying! 🌱We know that peer pressure (seeing how others are doing and trying to match their behaviours works) $ We know that financial incentives and the positive elements of increasing profitability through climate solutions works For all of us working in the climate space we need optimism, we need passion, purpose and leadership. We need to use psychologically backed behaviour change programmes. Research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA pooled the results of 430 individual studies that examined environment-related behaviours and that looked into changing those behaviours through several interventions, including financial incentives and educational campaigns. The authors analysed how six different types of interventions compared with one another in their ability to influence real-world behavior and at how five behaviors compared in terms of how easy they were to change. Though education can be necessary to make the public aware of a problem in the first place, “we find over and over again that it’s not very effective” at actually changing behaviors, says study co-author Magnus Bergquist, a psychologist at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. It’s similar to how knowing that we should exercise more or drink less alcohol doesn’t mean we will do so, he explains. “Just knowing what’s right, or healthy, or environmentally friendly isn’t really a sufficient model for changing behaviours,” Bergquist says. Yet financial incentives helped - around 63 per cent in the control group took more positive climate action when peer comparison methods were provided, or financial incentives or drivers were offered (money saved, business improvements given). If we truly want behaviour change in society, industry related to climate action - we can't just keep stating the problem. #climatechange #behaviourchange #incentives #people #planet #profit

🌏 State of the Climate 2024 The 2024 CSIRO & Bureau of Meteorology State of the Climate report is out https://lnkd.in/gTyErG7A, and it’s a clear reminder that climate impacts are escalating in both severity and frequency. The data paints a future we can’t ignore: 1️⃣ Warming Temperatures: Australia’s average temperature has increased by over 1.5°C since 1910. Forecast more heat extremes will put pressure on health, infrastructure, and our flora and fauna. 2️⃣ Extreme Weather on the Rise: Continued increase in dangerous fire weather days with a longer fire season leading to an increased frequency of bushfires; more intense short duration heavy rainfall leading to floods; increased and longer marine heatwaves leading to more frequent and severe bleaching of coral reefs; fewer tropical cyclones but with higher intensity, will continue to challenge our communities and ecosystems. 3️⃣ Rising Sea Levels: Our coastlines will continue to face higher-than-global-average sea level rises, threatening coastal communities and habitats. 4️⃣ Declining Rainfall & Snow Patterns: Southern Australia is seeing less winter rainfall which will likely lead to more time in drought, impacting agriculture and water security for communities and businesses/infrastructure. This report is a call to action. As leaders, innovators, and citizens, we each have a role to play in driving adaptation and resilience. Whether it’s supporting sustainable policies, ensuring every investment or project we undertake takes sustainability into account, or simply evolving our daily choices, our actions matter. We can shape a better future—together. 🌱 https://lnkd.in/guhr-gB6 #ClimateAction #StateOfTheClimate #CSIRO #BOM #Sustainability #Adaptation #Resilience

🌡Even accounting for natural climate variations over centuries, the summer of 2023 was the hottest since the peak of the Roman Empire. This has aggravated the water crisis, leading to increased water scarcity and stressing the need for urgent adaptation measures. 📊The results, published in the journal Nature, also reveal that in the Northern Hemisphere, the 2015 Paris Agreement's goal to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels has already been breached. Following on from the findings of a National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (#NOAA) report indicating that atmospheric concentrations of the three most important #greenhousegases are at historic levels. See link: https://lnkd.in/d8VYwNxU The just released March 2024 monthly climate bulletin from the #CopernicusClimate Change Service (#C3S) shows that last month was: 1. Warmer than any other March in the data record, at 0.73°C above the 1991-2020 average for the month; 2. 1.68°C warmer than an estimate of the March average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period. Further graphs, maps and data at; https://lnkd.in/d6CY2g7n
The #CopernicusClimate Change Service's monthly climate bulletin is out now: 📈 it was the tenth month in a row that is the warmest on record for the respective month of the year; 📈 #Antarctic sea ice extent was 20% below average, the 6th lowest March extent in the record; 📈 March was wetter than average in most of western Europe, regions of Scandinavia and north-western Russia. On analysing the data published by the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, the BBC has said that the world's oceans have suffered a year of record-breaking heat due to climate change. The seas have broken temperature records every single day for the past year. This has not only caused widespread coral bleaching, but has threatened the habitat for many marine species. For 13 months in a row, the sea surface temperature has been the warmest on record. According to experts, warmer sea temperatures may result in severe hurricanes and these changes could have long term effects on the Earth like rising sea levels. Greenhouse gases and El Niño have warmed the seas. The Junior Age publishes safe, easy to understand and unbiased news for children. 🌳 Reporting on the vulnerability of Tasmania’s tall eucalypt forests under a warming climate, ‘Giants Under Threat’, was released in March on the International Day of Forests. The report summarises recent studies that have found the tall eucalypt forest at Warra, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, shows an unusually high sensitivity to temperature rise.
