Green buildings do more than just save energy — they actively improve the health and well-being of communities! 🌿 According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), commercial and residential buildings account for 36% of carbon emissions in the U.S. By replacing fossil-fueled appliances, insulating windows and doors, and even installing rooftop solar, buildings can become healthier, more affordable places to live and work — all while reducing pollution and carbon emissions for the broader community. When we invest in green buildings, we’re investing in a healthier, more vibrant future for everyone. Learn more about how Climate United is investing in greener houses, schools, churches, and more on our website at ClimateUnited.org. 🏡

Great day kicking off the 15th annual California Climate and Energy Forum #CCEC24 in the City of Palm Springs with CivicWell CEO Bernadette Austin. In Palm Springs, like entire Coachella Valley, our economy and our way of life depend on our ability to mitigate climate change as much as possible both here at home and with our partner cities and organizations. We also need to continue to adapt to the climate changes we’re already seeing, especially to protect our vulnerable residents. All our plans – from our airport master plan to our parks master plan and our zoning code update – are informed by ever-increasing heat. We inherently understand the importance of a Sustainability, a value instilled by the Agua Caliente tribe thousands of years ago and carried forward by our Desert Modernist architects. Our primary economic driver, tourism, is inherently seasonal. Climate change threatens to shorten our tourist season, which could result in a devastating 20% reduction in revenue. We have achieved some great milestones, but we have a long way to go. The City of Palm Springs is committed to reaching carbon neutrality in line with the state’s 2045 target. That’s a challenge given our tourism based economy. We reached our 2020 goal, matching our 1990 emission levels…..and on time! One of the projects I’m most proud of is introducing our community choice aggregator, called Desert Community Energy which primarily offers a carbon-free electricity option. Over 70% !!!! of Palm Springs electricity customers choose the carbon-free offering. This in itself contributes to roughly a 17% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions. Together, we can improve and implement zero waste, low carbon transportation, safe and healthy buildings, heat safety, water management, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced technology and move forward with a true carbon-neutral economy/society.

Air is perhaps the most universally accessible of all commons, yet access to clean air (free from pollution and toxic waste) is unequal. Those living in informal settlements often face the greatest exposure to air pollution and yet have the least agency & resource to reduce it, lacking the finances, infrastructure or voice to find cleaner alternatives within their settlement and resist polluting forces from outside it. Nature-based solutions and urban planning can play a role in reducing this exposure to air pollution whilst addressing the spatial injustice that drives it - but to what extent can it make an impact in the areas where it matters most? Next Tuesday, HLC will be exploring this question with the help of practitioners and researchers experienced in the overlap between air pollution and the built environment.
