🇪🇺 The EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) has been approved by the European Council, and thus finally becomes law - Expect it to be published in the EU's official journal in a few weeks time. This one hasn't exactly been a conventional negotiation, and that's reflected in the number of abstentions in the final vote (10 😬). But is a hugely important moment for corporate sustainability globally, as many large companies are required to adopt and put into effect climate transition plans. 🌍 There is lots of implementation ahead for Member States, and more guidance to come from Brussels, but of course companies shouldn't wait to get started on tackling their climate impact through a transition plan, and those who are well underway with preparation for their first CSRD report should already be in the weeds on understanding and addressing their carbon footprint. 📚 Watershed's guide to the new rule is below, and we have a webinar coming up in June to discuss transition plans in the context of CSRD (and now CSDDD!) preparedness, featuring David Carlin and David Ross. ✍ Blog - https://lnkd.in/ejbrpDFc 📺 Webinar - https://lnkd.in/e9P2pYhT

It’s official, an ISSB-aligned mandatory climate reporting regime in Australia was introduced into the House of Representatives on 27 March 2024. While the first group of businesses (larger entities) are required to report against the new climate-disclosure requirements from 1 January 2025 – this also includes the emissions of their suppliers. This is as part of the 'Scope 3' emissions component – emissions that occur up or down a company's supply chain. We’re working closely with carbon accounting firm ClimateClever to help businesses start the process now – it’s about putting a plan in place to: 1. Start measuring your impact and keep track of emissions 2. Understand your impact 3. Be ready to report on, and communicate your climate impact story. In addition to crafting standard climate reports, we can analyse your climate data and curate a compelling sustainability narrative. These narratives can be integrated into your annual or sustainability reports, as well as blog/website articles. Book a complimentary 30 minute conversation to learn more. #mandatoryclimatereporting #SMEs #carbonaccounting #carbonreporting

The SEC has just voted 3-2 to pass it's Climate Disclosure Rule. However, this rule is watered down, and deeply weakened, by not enforcing companies to measure, report and manage their Scope 3 emissions. Many U.S. companies have already committed to climate action independently of government endorsements, as seen with the “We Are Still In” declaration in 2017. A similar proactive approach is recommended for the impending regulations shaping the new era of mandatory climate disclosure in North America. Regardless of the specifics of finalized mandatory disclosures, companies should do all they can to move toward a climate-friendly economy. This SEC disclosure is a great baseline, but should be treated as more than just a box-ticking exercise. Companies need to go above and beyond what is required of them.
