We recently hosted the first in a series of webinars on topical events in the field of alcohol and substances to be held throughout 2024 marking our 25th anniversary in providing support to communities across NI via prevention, intervention & training services. During the years 2020 to 2022, opioids were responsible in over half of the annual drug-related deaths, with an average of 118 deaths each year mentioning opioids on the death certificate. The statistics presented highlight the severity of the situation, particularly the significant increase in drug-related deaths and the increasing rise of synthetic opioids suggests a trend in the evolving nature of substances and the growing need for targeted efforts to address these issues. 25 years after pioneering harm reduction reforms, former Premier Bob Carr has called on NSW to act on evidence and implement pill testing. Speaking at the NSW Drug Summit, Carr emphasised that pill testing is a proven, life-saving measure. This year’s summit has highlighted the urgent need for harm minimisation strategies, particularly with one of the hottest summers ahead. Advocates, including AFA, have pushed for reforms that follow evidence—not fear. Pill testing empowers young people to make safer choices and gives them access to the medical advice they need. With everything else going on in Ireland at the moment, it's sometimes easy to forget that there is a very grave ongoing fallout from the both the C0VID l9 injections and the lockdowns. Excess mortality rates in Ireland are soaring since 2022, and countless more are suffering from injuries and other consequences of that surreal time in our history (a time which may be replicated again in the near future). Aside from this we must not ignore  the proposed (and very alarming) Northern Ireland Health Bill and the similarly disturbing upcoming World Health Pandemic Treaty, due to be ratified in 2025 by 197 countries). It behoves us as a people n to never forget what was done to us and to never let it happen again. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl and its dangers, while well-documented by health professionals and law enforcement, are largely unknown to the general population and even more so to its most vulnerable population: youth and young adults. ▶️ According to the CDC, fentanyl is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any other cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and all other accidents. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) released its annual Monitoring the Future survey results showing underage drinking prevalence rates have continued to decline for 10th and 12th graders for the fourth year in a row.
