Inside Microsoft's struggles with Copilot In September 2023, Microsoft's famously soft-spoken CEO, Satya Nadella, unveiled the company's flagship AI product, Copilot, with sweeping fanfare. "Copilot will fundamentally transform our relationship with technology," he declared. The AI assistant, he predicted, would give birth to an "era that uplifts every person, industry, community, and country." #MicrosoftCopilot #AIChallenges #TechInnovationStruggles #ArtificialIntelligenceDevelopment #SoftwareTransformation #MicrosoftAI #DigitalAssistantEvolution #AIIndustryTrends #CopilotFuture #AIAdoptionChallenges https://lnkd.in/gJrzYc_g

Interesting thoughts of Gregor Biljardt on the monetization model of AI!
⁉ In my recent work on #GenAImonetization, I often encounter questions like: Does usage-based billing work? Isn't it too complicated? Should I opt for a user-based fee to keep things simple and understandable? It's exciting to observe Microsoft's shift towards usage-based pricing with MS Copilot for Security. Unlike other Copilot products that typically implement a user-based fee, this product adopts a $4 per hour usage fee. Usage-based metrics like these offer an EXCELLENT strategy to #landandexpand (📈) your customer base while aligning price with the value customers receive. Moreover, they effectively prevent heavy usage from impacting the #profitability (🤑) of GenAI applications—a challenge Microsoft reportedly faced with GitHub Copilot last year. But, will it work? You want to avoid the "taxi-meter" (🚕) effect or any perception of lost control by the customers (⚙). Success hinges on whether customers perceive the pricing metric as fair. The low entry barrier for Copilot for Security certainly improves chances for success, especially compared to other AI security chatbots like Crowdstrike, which offers an AI security bot named “Charlotte” for $20 per year. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times: AI can bring tremendous benefits to any business, small or large. But the success of your deployment hangs on the accuracy and availability of data. - You want an AI-enabled chatbot? Data. - You want AI-generated performance insights? Data. - Want to classify inbound contacts automatically? Data. - Real-time interaction analysis? Data. - Generate Marketing materials? Data. - Identify sales opportunities? Data. The old adage, sh*t in, sh*t out comes to mind. And don't think just because your data is accurate and available that AI can be a silver bullet built on top of it all; Accuracy and availability applies to the scenario. - Your data is accurate up to midnight the previous day? Can't be used for every real-time interaction use-case that requires intra-day visibility. - Your AI engine has access to all your data? Heightened risk of hallucination. Think you can prompt-engineer your way out of that pickle? Probably, but then what's the point in using AI? Be considerate of all of the surrounding dependencies you need to get right before you jump in. Then, when you're ready, take the leap. Thank you to Gareth Humphreys for the thoughts below.
"Copilot draws from the universe of data within your organisation. But that data has to be secure: proper labelling and permissions policies will ensure Copilot can reason across that wealth of data without giving people access to confidential material" The number of requests we're seeing for Microsoft Copilot projects - and AI support in general - is off the charts at the moment. But it's worth bearing in mind that - just like most technology projects - you'll only get value out if you know what problem you're trying to solve (and can measure the baseline, plus any incremental increase from it). This link from Microsoft is an easy to digest good starting point. While it can't give you the specific use-cases for your organisation, it *can* give non-technical stakeholders an idea. There's a plethora of supporting material in the links too. But if there's ONE THING I'd implore you to take heed of, it's the opening statement. In the last couple of weeks we've seen real-world examples of how mis-labelling and oversharing have caused problems. After all, nobody wants "salaries.xls" being indexed. https://lnkd.in/eWvbZTU6

Microsoft's approach to integrating Copilot deeper into existing systems is evident, focusing on embedding simple agents not only in applications like Word and Excel but also directly into the operating system. While this integration makes sense, it inherently limits the use cases to more straightforward, question-based interactions. I don't anticipate that Copilot will assist with solving complex problems but rather offer superficial tips and guidance. The introduction of the Think Deeper model, which allows the AI more time to process and respond, doesn't fundamentally change this limitation. The AI agents are still operating in isolation, without true collaboration between human and AI agents. Lastly, privacy concerns remain a significant issue with Copilot Vision. It's unclear what information is leaving the system and to what extent. This is an inherent problem that becomes more pronounced as the AI agent becomes more deeply embedded into the operating system.

Microsoft just announced the launch of AI co-workers. Known as 'agents', they are coming to Copilot and Dynamics 365. AI agents have autonomy. They can "do" rather than just "say". Microsoft hasn't managed to fully unleash generative AI because these agents still require time and skill to build. When finished, they're very much on train tracks. They are just a hint of the future. Ten pre-built agents will be introduced to Dynamics 365, specialising in areas like sales, service, finance, supply chain, and more. The agents can operate independently, initiating tasks and responding to business signals without constant human oversight. Copilot Studio will also allow users to create their own autonomous agents, moving from private to public preview next month. The agents use OpenAI’s o1 model series, with features like encryption, data loss prevention measures, and guardrails for enterprise safety.
