A nice article about improvements in weather and seasonal forecasting. An additional point around climate change and whether it affects forecasts is that statistical forecasts and traditional knowledge-based forecasts lose some of their skill in a changing climate, whereas numerical modelling techniques (which are about responding to what’s happening rather than basing our predictions on the past) shouldn’t lose their skill.

The Unequal Distribution of Global Precipitation and its impacts On average, nearly one meter of rain or snow falls on the Earth in a year. However, differences in latitude, winds, changes in the Earth’s surface, and the planet’s tilt, make for an unequal distribution of global precipitation. What Affects Global Precipitation Patterns? 1️⃣ Proximity to water 🌊 : Oceans and lakes provide a constant source of moisture. 2️⃣ Lower latitudes 🌍 : Areas close to the equator are hotter, increasing evaporation from nearby water bodies. 3️⃣ Topography 🗻 : Mountain ranges, especially along coasts, force warm air to rise and cool, resulting in rain or snow on the windward side and dry rain shadows on the lee side. 3️⃣ Trade winds 🌬 : Persistent easterly surface winds blow from subtropical high-pressure areas toward the equator, carrying moist air from the ocean to the land. Understanding and mapping global precipitation is essential for sustainable #watermanagement, and the World Meteorological Organization's efforts are invaluable in this regard. #WMO keeps monitoring and analyzing global precipitation patterns to provide vital data for scientists studying the Earth’s climate system and aiding short-term weather forecasting to predict rain or snow. Such information support managing water resources, monitoring drought and flood conditions, and enabling quick responses to extreme weather events #earlywarningforall https://lnkd.in/epMQykmK
