If you’re like me, you probably find yourself reading through comments on social media regarding our industry. A lot of times, they aren’t the most flattering for our industry. This particular video of comments were from a video we posted on the WrenchWay TikTok account. You see it all over social media and it’s something that always bugs me. Why does it bug me? Because some of it is true. Of course, you’re going to have people who are just perpetually unhappy but there is some truth and pain in what they are saying. How do we, as an industry, take these comments to heart and really work on changing things? There are so many shops across the country that have done such a great job at adapting to keep their teams happy. There are also a lot of shops that haven’t and they are driving people out of the industry. We desperately need to listen and change as the needs of todays Techs are shifting. Do you find yourself constantly looking for Technician talent? Look in the mirror and figure out how you can turn these current complaints into positives.

Changing things, is a system wide issue. It requires all players to agree on a singular path to “career” while allowing for deviations in path. Similar to finding the common architecture for a group of products (think IOT). With the common architecture in place, every IOT manufacturer knows how to prepare the basics so that everyone can benefit from multiple systems in one house (Kasa Light Switches and Sonos speakers for example). Regardless of the two different products, they still need to work together in a similar fashion and process. Like two different techs working at the same facility would have access to the same set of basic rules and principles. Because there is no clear plan, people do not want to enter the trade. Because the trade is viewed as “if I don’t get into a top program at a top dealership, I’m going to be relegated to the corner gas station with no career involvement. And I have all this upfront cost for $15 an hour and $xx,xxx in tool investment over the next 5-10 years to stand out from my peers.” Knowing this and seeing this path, it’s no wonder we can’t find technician or qualified service people to stick around. Without a baseline for us to establish as the floor, we’ll never see the ceiling.

URGENT: Challenge Producer needed… (based anywhere) Shout out on behalf of a US based production partner of ours who needs an experienced challenge producer for 2-3 weeks in August (ie starting imminently). You’ll be coming up with ambitious challenges of scale for a primetime TV series probing business and leadership skills. Experience on these kinds of shows is an advantage but they don’t want cut-and-paste Apprentice ideas, so if you don’t have business show credits that’s also ok so long as you have a diverse set of *challenge producer* credits. You can work from home/anywhere, but the production is LA based so there will be some time shifting/evening calls required. You can ping me a CV (my email address in the comments) and I’ll forward it on if it’s appropriate. As this is not my production I won’t be personally replying so please don’t be upset if you don’t hear back. I’ve requested that anyone they do interview is given timely feedback if they don’t get the role. A hiring decision will likely be made by Friday 26 July. I don’t usually post other people’s roles, but I know a little bit about this project and it’s such an exciting format and a great opportunity for a UK challenge producer to enhance their US experience. Finally: to save you from wasting your time and my time I wanted to emphasise once more that this is a request for an *experienced challenge producer* with availability to start in the next couple of weeks. If you’re an AP, an edit producer, a story producer without tonnes of demonstrable task experience, an editor, or do other role that isn’t specifically the one they’re looking for: ***an experienced challenge producer***, please dont email as it won’t be acknowledged or forwarded. 🇺🇸

When I was working my first Production Assistant gig, I learned one lesson that has applied to basically ever other position I've worked in my career. "The smaller the production, the larger the role you need to play." Now this was told to me while I was a PA on a 40+ person television production, but it has stayed true across every project I've worked on since. This doesn't mean that working on small projects or as a part of a large organization is bad. Both environments can be fantastic for you in the right scenario. To me, this phrase helps you understand where you efforts will serve your team the best. For me now, it's taught me that I enjoy working in small to mid-size operations. These are the spaces that allow my natural desire to broaden my horizons and pick-up new skills to also be incredibly beneficial to the team as a whole. If you prefer to master the tasks at the core of your position, and add value by pushing further down one specific area of expertise, then maybe being part of a large operation is a better fit. Just my experience reflecting on the variety of environments I've been in. What do you think?
