My unscientific impression is that more data scientist job listings now ask for data engineering and software developer-related qualifications. I noticed this in a recent MITRE Lead Data Scientist job posting, and I've highlighted the lines that reflect this (maybe?) trend. I don't think this is inherently good or bad, just something to keep in mind both as a data scientist and if you manage data scientists and are considering what they'll want to learn to stay current. It doesn’t matter if you're a Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or Data Analyst. It doesn’t matter what title you hold. You’ll still need to: 1. Handle missing or inconsistent data. 2. Optimize SQL queries for better performance. 3. Communicate findings to non-technical stakeholders. 4. Integrate data from multiple sources. 5. Ensure data security and compliance are met. 6. Landing an entry-level Data Science job in 2024 is like threading a needle. Out of 4,462 US full-time Data Science positions posted on LinkedIn last month, 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟓𝟖𝟏 (𝟏𝟑%) 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 “𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥.” Peeling the layers from these “Entry Level” listings, I sampled 10 randomly and discovered that 6 required 2 years of experience. 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝟓.𝟐%. This is infuriating! Competition is fierce, but you can sharpen your kills and build the strength to outshine.
