According to Statista, more than 75% of U.S. consumers “placed some level of importance on #sustainably #packaged #cosmetic products in 2023,” with the largest cohort stating that sustainable cosmetic packaging was at least somewhat important in their skin care and makeup selection process. At the same time, Spate has noted a 34.6% year-over-year uptick in searches for #upcycled products; simultaneously, searches for chemical recycling, particularly chemical recycling centers, has also increased. Taken together, consumer awareness of the sustainability issues associated with cosmetic packaging continues to grow. Here’s a look at new or redesigned packaging solutions on my radar. Cannabis packaging company RXDco launched child-resistant containers that it calls cocoon jars. The patented press-fit, pop-off closure makes an audible click and provides an airtight seal that keeps the product fresh and prevents odors from escaping, the company said in a news release. They’re made from polypropylene, which the company says is recyclable, and also are available in PHA bioplastic, which it says is compostable. “We believe that Cocoon Jars will set a new benchmark for cannabis packaging, combining innovation, functionality, and eco-friendliness,” Moshe Zussman, CEO at RXDco, said in the release. Novolex brand Waddington North America introduced clear food containers with a tamper-evident “flag.” The feature automatically pops up and stays raised once the rigid plastic container is opened, indicating to a consumer that the container is not sealed. The TamperFlag activates in a single step when the hinged container is initially closed. This product eliminates the need for tear strips, according to the company, and the design is leak-resistant. The cosmetics industry is focusing on refillable packaging solutions to reduce environmental impact, innovations at this year's Paris Packaging, Inc. Week have revealed. Glass suppliers are offering premium refillable jars for skincare products, combining glass with recyclable materials like PP, PCR and biosourced plastics. Meanwhile, airless technology specialists have adapted their models to be reusable, with companies like LABLABO, PINARD BEAUTY PACK and Berlin Packaging introducing refillable airless solutions. COSMOGEN promoted its reusable applicators, while companies like somater and TECHNICAPS are exploring biomaterials like moulded fibre cups and seaweed starch compounds as sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics. AXILONE GROUP is offering customisable, refillable lipstick cases made from monomaterials like aluminum, PET or PP, to ensure recyclability, while Asquan Group has developed a refillable lipstick pack solution made entirely from aluminum.
