Whatever your own personal views are on the business case for HS2 I think we can all appreciate the skill and dedication of those involved....a great example in my view of technology and hard-work overcoming the geographical challenges of delivering a project.
Final breakthrough for our longest tunnel 🤩🎉. Our second boring machine TBM digging under the Chiltern Hills broke through at the tunnel’s northern portal yesterday afternoon, completing a journey that began in June 2021! Named Cecilia, the TBM has driven for 10 miles underground to join twin sister machine – Florence. Between them, the two 2,000 tonne machines have built the twin bore tunnel at depths of up to 80 metres and excavated three million cubic metres of chalk 🤩. The world record for tunnel boring was set 30 years ago with a speed of roughly 1/2 mile per week. There are claims that recent advancements in Tunnel Boring Machine(TBM) technology combined with boring a smaller tunnel (14 ft diameter) allow a TBM to dig 1 mile per week at a cost of less than $20M per mile. Using electric shuttles to transport passengers in dedicated underground tunnels, built at this speed, and at this cost, could revolutionize transit.

A growing population and aging infrastructure have accelerated the need for trenchless installations – including railroad crossings. In a recent article for the Northeast Journal of Trenchless Technology Practices, senior engineers Jason Heinz, P.E., and Dennis Doherty, P.E., F. ASCES examine the planning process for future trenchless railroad crossings. Read more, starting on page 58: https://bit.ly/49jBF0v

What is tunnel convergence and how will implementing a monitoring regime prevent potential disaster? 👇👇 Tunnel convergence monitoring is crucial in identifying any deformation within a tunnel's structure. Caused by ground displacement or material failure, construction activities can often exacerbate these issues. Early detection is key for prompt repairs and avoiding potential disruptions. As part of our monitoring services, our team can install and monitor sensors to ensure any structural issues are identified, and safely addressed.
