Exploring the Hidden World of Fungi In 2022, the Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) was thrilled to be commissioned to create a series of fungal ‘artworks’ for the Hidden World of Killer Fungi exhibition at the Queen’s Exhibition Space, University of Exeter. These captivating images—developed in collaboration with scientists like Dr. Alyssa Hudson, funded by Noah's Pink Balloon Leukaemia Fund —are now available online, offering a window into this fascinating research. 2022 marked the opening of our state-of-the-art MYCOscopy lab at the CMM. Equipped with five bespoke microscopes, this cutting-edge facility allows researchers to capture 4D living images of host-fungus interactions, study fungal cell biology, and drive drug discovery. Over the past year, the MYCOscopy lab has been used for nearly 10,000 hours by more than 50 medical mycologists. This incredible resource was designed and is managed by CMM’s Senior Experimental Officer, Dr. Darren Thomson, empowering scientists to observe fungal cells like never before. These images—and the stories behind them—showcase the immense value of this work to the world of science.
