It is with profound sadness that Renishaw announces the death of our co-founder and Non-executive Director, Sir David McMurtry. Will Lee, Chief Executive, said, “David was a great visionary, an outstanding innovator who constantly challenged conventions, and a hugely empathetic man. He will be greatly missed by so many, including the generations of Renishaw engineers who he inspired and mentored. The manufacturing industry has lost a true pioneer and many of us at Renishaw have lost a father figure and a friend.” Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife and family.

RIP Sir David. An absolute gent and role model. Treated everyone from the cleaner to the top with respect. One evening, he popped round the corner and asked if he could borrow a dustpan. (Yes, I was an evening cleaner). I asked where he wanted me to clean and he insisted he would clean his mess. He thanked me for getting the dustpan. Condolences to his family.

To know the man was to meet a humble genius. Concorde, Renishaw, charity and in his early 80s, starting a car company that blew away all other competitors and still holds the Goodwood all time record. Thank you to he and John Deer for taking the entrepreneurial risk to start Renishaw, and for having already put in place a stable succession process.

Every conversation I had with Sir David was splendid - plenty of challenge on pretty much everything discussed but all wth purpose. My favourite meeting started with - “thats interesting, what’s the BOM? What’s the expected sales price? Oh maybe not so interesting! Well, Have you heard about my car project?” Legend.

Sir David’s passing is such a loss to so many. I had the privilege of presenting Gloucestershire Media Lifetime Achievement Award to Sir David & John. What they achieved is inspirational. Sir David kindly met groups of our GAIN delegates to share his thoughts on #innovation - and what’s more he shared innovative ideas for their businesses too. A #humble #leader. He’ll be missed.

Really sorry to hear this sad news. Sir David was truely a visionary leader who changed the world of engineering. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and the entire Renishaw team.

Sir David was a true genius whose brilliance played a pivotal role in building the aerospace industry, among many others, with an unwavering focus on quality. We’ve had the privilege of working with Renishaw products for nearly 30 years, and his dedication was truly remarkable. KES Machine had the honor of visiting Renishaw in the UK just two years ago, and even then, Sir David was still actively coming into the office for meetings. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by many.

It is with great sadness that I received the news of the death of Mr David McMurtry, one of the founders of Renishaw. I had the privilege of meeting him on my first visit to the company in 1988, when I started bringing the Renishaw brand to Brazil. During the many visits that followed, whenever I met him, he would generously share his vast knowledge and exceptional capacity for development, which have been an inspiration and guide in my career. I would like to express my sincere condolences to his family and the entire Renishaw team, who have lost an extraordinary professional, but have inherited the priceless legacy of his dedication, vision and knowledge. May his memory continue to illuminate the paths of innovation and progress

Such a shame to hear this sad news. It was always a highlight when Sir David sat in on meetings with us and his continual spark and desire to improve on the status quo was never anything less than inspirational. Thoughts are with everyone at Renishaw and I’m sure his legacy remains in very safe hands with the team there.
