Aylesford based Myers Transport has acquired its first Renault Trucks T-High Turbo Compound with the goal of driving down fuel costs and lowering its environmental impact, a move that it has signalled as a 'game changer'. With a second Turbo Compound set to join the fleet soon, the company is strengthening its commitment to efficiency and sustainability in every mile. Reflecting on SA Auto Week 2024, an inspiring event held under the theme “Reimagining the Future, Together: Celebrating 100 Years of Automotive Heritage, Passion, Resilience, and Ingenuity.” President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the automotive sector’s critical role in South Africa’s economy, contributing 15% of total exports and employing over 500,000 people across manufacturing and retail. The discussions focused on the South African Automotive Masterplan #SAAM35 with ambitions to grow vehicle production to 1% of global output and increase annual export value to R400 billion by 2035. Some key topics included: - electric vehicle policy development, - green hydrogen opportunities: A panel discussion sponsored by Old Mutual South Africa - and supply chain transformation, all aimed at keeping South Africa globally competitive amidst the transition to sustainable mobility solutions. Panels with industry leaders and government officials addressed global supply chain disruptions, the imperative for new energy vehicles (NEVs), and fostering investment in infrastructure. Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between government and private sectors to advance the adoption of NEVs and enhance local beneficiation of critical minerals. SA Auto Week provided a powerful platform for networking and innovation, cementing its place as the leading automotive thought leadership event in Africa. It was a privilege to witness such high-level dialogue on future-proofing South Africa’s automotive industry.
