From little things, big things grow. Earlier this year I jumped into the AD of Innovation & Research role at the Department of Finance. I was super excited to be in a space that allowed me to really explore and develop my passion for innovation and creativity - and bring a little of my 'crazy' to work each day 😉. One of the first things our little team wanted to do was find a way for staff to share THEIR great ideas - in their words, with their passion, and using their own flair. We wanted everyone to feel like they could get up and explain their potential projects in a safe and supportive environment. So, a little lunchtime event called Innovation Idol was born. Now this isn't a new idea. It's not in itself innovative. But it embraces our values of #empathy #collaboration #growth and #clarity by providing a forum for staff to engage with each other, explore presentation and pitching skills, clarify roles and processes and show how we are a truly supportive team. The first event was fun. It was light-hearted. It produced a few 'out there' ideas. But importantly it showcased how talented and creative our staff are and broke down a few barriers for others who were apprehensive about sharing their thoughts. From this first event, Innovation Idol has grown and grown. I went on long service leave and came back just in time to see Round 3 (run by Philippa Hansen, Kit Jack (née Chiang) and Lisa Ang - and I was blown away. What started as a slightly light-hearted activity to get staff engaged, has evolved into a fabulous forum for passionate people to share ideas for making change. And is starting to result in some amazing innovation projects. This isn't about 'oh that was my idea' - this is about how proud I am of the way our staff work together and one person might start an idea, but then someone else grabs it and adds to it and from here things snowball. So if YOU have a small thought about how you can make positive changes, get in there, talk about it, have a go - you just never know what it will grow into... Do you know what? Innovation doesn’t work… …when done in isolation. 🧠It can’t be the job of single people or teams to ‘be innovative’. It takes a culture and mindset with buy in from bottom to top; one where it’s ok to try new things, there is space to test, and acceptance that it may lead to learning or failure, before scale. 🧪It also can’t be done in ‘labs’ or silos, disconnected from the business, aimlessly testing concepts or cool tech with no eye on business value as an outcome. ⁉️And it can’t be done without first understanding the problem you’re trying to solve, with real clarity on who you are solving for for, the value it will bring them and some idea of what good looks like from a potential solution. 🚀Which is why, together with the brilliant minds of BIMA (British Interactive Media Association) Innovation Council, “The Innovators Guide” was created. Lindsay Herbert Alex McCloy Duane Holland Sunny Kumar Rose Tighe Roselyn Xavier Ant Boyle Matt Sullivan 💡A practical toolkit made from real world examples coupled with expertise from across industries. From starting with the problem to involving stakeholders and iterating it was great fun being involved in the workshops which ran last year to help extract the insight from SMEs and I hope you agree the outcome is both interesting and insightful! ⚡️Innovators!
