#PublishedToday | “The 2️⃣ worst global health problems have combined forces well. But the institutions addressing them have miserably failed to put their act together,” wrote Dr Tim France, a noted global health thought leader, in an op-ed article titled “The chasm between TB and HIV” which was widely published in several newspapers of high TB burden countries in Asia Pacific and Africa in 2006. Even after 18 years, his words remain deeply relevant. Eamonn Murphy, Director, UNAIDS Asia Pacific and UNAIDS Eastern Europe and Central Asia, opened his keynote address in the End TB Dialogues Summit held recently, underlining the importance of bringing TB and HIV services together and strikingly called upon the dire need to ‘break the silos’ – a clarion call which Dr France had also unequivocally given through his op-ed of almost two decades back! “Many of the [TB and HIV] programmes are operating in isolation and almost in conflict with each other and it is not helping the patients [co-infected with TB and HIV] we all serve. There are many missed opportunities for HIV and TB service access in Asia Pacific” said Eamonn. 🔷 Central Chronicle, India (op-ed page, 5th April 2024) https://lnkd.in/gkwPWTYG 🔷 CNS https://lnkd.in/gAQNuXCh #healthforall #Integratedhealth #TBHIV #endTB #TB #HIV #AIDS #endAIDS #YesWeCanEndTB #FindAllTB #treatalltb #preventalltb #undetectableequalsuntransmittable #UequalsU #WorldHealthDay #WHD2024 #WorldHealthDay2024

From May 30 –31, the Data.FI project supported two virtual workshops in #Panama. The workshops were organized by the Ministry of Health’s National STI/HIV Program for partners from the health regions that were implementing HIV situation rooms with the goal of exchanging experiences and good practices related to the use of HIV data. The two workshops brought together #healthcareworkers and other regional staff from Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, and the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca (for the first workshop), and from Guna Yala, the Panama City Metropolitan Area, and San Miguelito (for the second workshop). During the data review portion of the workshops, the team observed remarkable recent progress. In Chiriquí, recent data cleaning efforts resulted in a 33% drop (from 36% to 3%) among people who knew their HIV status but did not receive antiretroviral therapy. And from January to April 2024, the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca health region witnessed an increase in viral load testing coverage from 75% to 85%. These workshops matter because they facilitate collaboration between local implementing partners to spread data-driven practices that can be replicated to yield positive health outcomes in other regions. Furthermore, in exchanging local solutions in Panama, Data.FI is also strengthening the learning capacity across regions. #USAID #PEPFAR #CentralAmerica #HIV #DataUse #ExchangeIdeas #Workshops #LocalSolutions #CapacityStrengthening

MSH at #AIDS2024: We appreciate the work of #journalists and believe they play a critical role in #publichealth. So we always make time to engage them. Here are MSH President and CEO, Marian Wentworth, and MSH Technical Director of Infectious Diseases and #HIV and #AIDS Lead Sarah Konopka at the International AIDS Conference 2024 with Anna Miti of #Zimbabwe's Broadcasting Corporation and Lorraine Mwanza of #Zambia's Media Science Cafe MESICA. Journalists ask: What role do international NGOs like MSH play in the fight against HIV? What are some of the behind-the-scenes efforts that make services possible? How does MSH help countries shore up their #supplychains and #pharmaceuticalsystems to ensure everyone, everywhere has access to the medicines and supplies they need to prevent and treat HIV? What are some of the biggest challenges we see, and opportunities for progress? As donor support dwindles, what role can NGOs like MSH play in helping countries adapt and transform their health systems so no one is left behind? Journalists translate our language—which can sometimes be too technical, sometimes too detailed—into something more accessible to the people who need to know—whether a community member, a stakeholder organization, or even a policy maker. What do you want to know? (L-R: anna miti, lorraine mwanza, Marian Wentworth, and Sarah Konopka) Internews Ida Jooste Ida Jooste

Today is World HIV Vaccine Awareness Day! While the scientific community continues its incredible work towards a vaccine, early testing remains the key to controlling the spread of HIV and ensuring access to proper care. At Palladium: Make It Possible , we're proud to be a part of the Community Based HIV Testing and Linkage project led by AHF India Cares Foundation This initiative operates across 9 states and 22 districts in India, with the ambitious goal of achieving 100% linkage to care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Our dedicated team set up screening centres and provide compassionate guidance and support to those who test positive, helping them understand that HIV is not the end; with early diagnosis and proper care, they can lead healthy, fulfilling lives. It's crucial to remove the stigma and support those affected, guiding them towards a fearless future. In 2023, the project screened a total of 251,000 people and connected 90% of patients to antiretroviral therapy. This year, the program has already screened 66,187 people for HIV and found 994 people HIV positive with 84% linked to antiretroviral therapy (ART). The fight is still on as we aim to achieve 100% linkage to care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Read a powerful story of someone who received the support from this program and leading a life of dignity today. #WorldHIVVaccineAwarenessDay #HIVTesting #CBHTL #AHFIndiaCares #Palladium #India #EndHIVStigma Ankit Srivastava , Ranjit Nayak PRINCE2® , Nidhi Tikku PRINCE2® , Pragya Mishra

DTHF's Linda-Gail Bekker spoke to SABC about the challenges of current PrEP options. The interview also discusses the next important steps for Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly PrEP injectable, which is in the final stages of its clinical trials, and has already been shown to be superior in its effectiveness to oral daily PrEP in preventing HIV acquisition in cisgender women (in clinical trials held in Uganda and South Africa). "The most important thing we can do now in the [HIV] response, is to try to turn off new infections. As new infections are mostly happening amongst young people, who struggle to take a daily pill. Besides our usual prevention options, we do have daily oral PrEP and this requires daily activities and young people struggle to do that, so this gives us a new and very exciting option. " "Like any new intervention it needs real demand creation, and I am not sure we really have done that. If you compare what we did during covid, to get people to get vaccinated, we have done nothing on that scale, despite the fact that we are a country that has the biggest HIV problem, in the world, and every week, many young people in our country become newly infected. But when we do actually offer it to young people in our programmes, we see that there is acceptance and uptake, but quite soon that falls off and I think that’s just about doing something daily when you are young and you have lot going on in your life." "We have to see what the price of the drug is and then we will need to see will our government procure it. Will we be able to get it into the public sector, and will it be widely available. If so, we need to make sure that we are promoting it as much as we can and then the wonderful thing is that young people now really just need to make a decision twice every year, to go in and have the injection so it really unburdens the users and hopefully it unburdens the health system as well. And we really hope South Africa takes advantage of this."
