It's not a new idea-calls to raise wages have been sounding for some time-but this report from the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare makes it "official." Now perhaps the government can take consequential actions and implement policies to make sure companies will raise wages. In the case of SMEs, make sure that they can do this either by pushing for passing on costs to the firms that they supply or by some form of tax advantage. I can't speak about the economic theories of this but this report is now public, and that forces the government's hand to implement new policies to support wages going up.

UEBT is part of the Global Living Wage Coalition that is celebrating a decade of work helping move the idea of #livingwages from niche to norm. This progress can be seen in recent developments like the International Labour Organization (ILO) recent milestone agreement on living wages, which raises hopes for millions of workers around the world that decent wages could become a reality. It can also be seen in the discussions from leading companies across sectors, who are either contemplating or committing to pay living wages to workers in their #supplychains. UEBT supports companies to achieve living wages. We do this by helping companies to understand the gap between the current situation and living wages, and with this information, companies can develop strategies to promote better livelihoods for producers and workers. In the GLWC's recent statement, we as a group pause to consider what it took for this idea to take root and we look to the future, discussing what it will take to bring about the GLWC vision of a world where wages uphold the dignity of labour. And in an upcoming 📢 public dialogue 📢 on June 18, UEBT's own Georgina Villarreal, PhD will be speaking with other experts within the GLWC on the transformative potential in the pursuit of living wages worldwide. ➡ Read the full statement and register for the dialogue - https://lnkd.in/eqcut4HG Fairtrade International Rainforest Alliance ISEAL Bonsucro Anker Research Institute Fair Labor Association Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Social Accountability International #livingincome #decentwork #sustainablelivelihoods

Are you aware of the Business Improvement Subsidy program? The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) offers this subsidy to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that raise their minimum wage within the workplace and invest in productivity-enhancing measures. Here’s how it works: If you raise the hourly wage by ¥30 or more for each employee, you can receive up to ¥300,000 in subsidies. For businesses with fewer than 30 employees, the subsidy can be increased to ¥600,000. And if you’re a special exception business with over 10 employees and raise the hourly wage by ¥90, you could receive a whopping ¥6,000,000 in subsidies!
