The new #ProtectedPlanet report from UNEP-WCMC and IUCN is the first official evaluation of global progress on all elements of Target 3 of the Global Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Under Target 3, parties to the UN Biodiversity Convention agreed to conserve 30% of Earth’s land and seas by 2030. A key outcome of the UN Convention on Biodiversity was the adoption in 2022 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which includes 23 goals to help stop biodiversity loss by 2030. Investors are critical in assessing a company’s biodiversity impact and the related operational, legislative, and reputational risks. In 2022, the countries that are Party to the UN Biodiversity convention adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to tackle biodiversity loss. Under this framework, nations agree to a list of specific targets, one of which is to provide at least $20 billion a year to developing countries by 2025, increasing to at least $30 billion a year by 2030. Despite developed countries committing to these targets, a new research from ODI, a leading global affairs think tank, finds only two countries were paying their fair share of the biodiversity finance and the overwhelming majority of developed countries were not providing even half of their fair share.
