If you're interested in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and want to contribute your expertise, there are several ways to get involved. Opportunities are available for both early-career scientists and organizations focused on promoting science. Here are a few options: • Publishing scientific papers • Co-authoring IPCC reports • Participating in expert meetings and workshops • Reviewing IPCC reports as an expert • Organizing public information campaigns Currently, there's an open call for nominating experts to serve as authors and review editors for two major reports. The structure for these reports was agreed upon during the Panel’s 61st plenary session in Sofia. The 1st #StateofCDR report highlighted that the pace of innovation in CDR is still modest compared with what is needed to meet the #Paristemperaturegoal. Scaling up #CDR in line with the Paris temperature goal will require a historic acceleration of innovation. Thus, assessing #innovation provides an understanding of how CDR methods are evolving, how fast they might be deployed and how costs are changing. At the beginning of the innovation process stands #Research & Development (R&D). In chapter 2 of the #SoCDR report CDRterra scientist Dr. Sarah Lück of Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) gGmbH and her colleagues assess the state of R&D in CDR using the 3 indicators: research grants, scientific publications and patents. They find: 💡 Investments in R&D have been increasing steadily. Although there are signs of diversification, R&D remains concentrated in a few countries and on a few #carbondioxideremoval methods. ➡ There is little R&D activity in #oceanbasedCDR or, geographically, in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. While the number of scientific publications is growing rapidly, inventive activity has been in decline. 💡 Check out further key insights of the report: ➡ https://lnkd.in/dkK833SR Further authors of this chapter: Jan Minx (lead),Finn Müller-Hansen & Tim Repke, MCC Berlin, Benedict Probst Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Malte Toetzke Tim Engelmann & Volker Hoffmann ETH Zürich, Laura Diaz Anadon University of Cambridge, Jenna Greene & Greg Nemet University of Wisconsin-Madison Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford

This is truly unique. I wonder what the other universities will do next. Princeton University has reversed a previous policy that restricted funding for academic research from fossil fuel companies, stating that the measure had a “disparate and unfair impact” on faculty engaging in environmental research. Initially implemented in 2022, this policy was part of a broader movement among U.S. educational institutions to distance themselves from the oil, gas, and coal industries, which included divesting from 90 companies connected to these sectors within its endowment. Faculty members expressed that the restrictions hindered their ability to secure necessary funding for critical environmental research. In a recent update, three high-ranking officials from the university acknowledged that these rules unfavorably and unequally affected scholars addressing urgent environmental issues. They emphasized that researchers lost not only external funding opportunities but also valuable collaborative partnerships that aligned with the university's commitment to combat climate change. Under the revised guidelines, while Princeton’s endowment will maintain its divestment from fossil fuel companies, faculty are now permitted to accept research funding from these firms if their projects are specifically focused on reducing the environmental impacts of carbon emissions. However, this shift has sparked backlash among students, with an editorial in The Daily Princetonian labeling the decision as a “betrayal” of the university's mission and integrity, arguing that it compromises the institution’s responsibility to future generations. Critics argue that fossil fuel-funded research is likely to favor corporate interests and reinforce reliance on fossil fuels, rather than promoting innovative solutions. Since the original policy was imposed until January 2023, Princeton divested from 29 companies and identified 2,371 fossil fuel entities for potential disassociation. Despite lacking direct affiliations with most of these companies, this figure significantly increased from the original 90. The university will cease updating this list, which previously included notable mining and energy firms like BHP, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil, but will continue to publicly disclose all external research funding sources and contributions each year. In its latest report, Princeton revealed that research sponsorships in 2023 amounted to nearly $3.4 million from BP, $848,000 from ExxonMobil, $120,000 from Shell, and just over $100,000 from Syncrude. Furthermore, a congressional investigation conducted by Democrats in April highlighted instances of oil companies working with universities to further their business strategies. https://lnkd.in/eraf322Q

Meet RE-INTEGRATE 's Researcher of the week! 🏛 Bob van der Zwaan, lead of the regional modelling work. Here his words on his research and the role of TNO, his institution, in the project: As principal scientist at TNO and professor at the University of Amsterdam, my research focuses on integrated assessment modeling of deep decarbonisation scenarios and on techno-economics analysis of individual climate change mitigation technologies. In Work Package 4 of the RE-INTEGRATE project, dedicated to studying the opportunities for regional AU-EU integration of climate-compatible development strategies, we carry out regional energy-economy-environment modelling assessments. We also develop joint AU-EU recommendations for coherent regional policy measures, and disseminate our combined insights amongst policymakers, industry, society and academia. #ReintegrateAU_EU
