I hear lots of people talk about the ONE PERCENTERS. And finding that magic inch - doing the little things right that make the difference between 2nd and 1st. But what about the 99 percenter - attendance!!!! What's the only thing that's been proven to enhance performance? Getting them to turn up! Who's the only kid who can't get better? The kid who is not coming to training any more. The key to all this, is to shift away from the "pathway" model which is based on the assumption that every kid who picks up a tennis racket can be, should be, could be, wants to be a Grand Slam player or that every 8 year old who kicks a soccer ball is a season away from playing for Liverpool. What the "pathway" model has done is skewed our way of looking at sport. When a kid walks into your Club for the first time, what we SHOULD see is a great opportunity to connect with, engage and inspire a young human being and show them how much fun our sport can be. But we've been overly focused on finding the next Premier League player or the next NBA star or the next World record holder and instead of seeing kids - we see "athletes" and potential champions. Why don't we change our focus and see kids as kids - not as athletes. Let's change our goal from finding champions - to helping ever kid be safe, healthy, happy and active. Let's move away from driving kids onto our elite athlete pathway to just providing enjoyable and engaging training and playing environments. If you want more brilliant elite athletes, start with creating experiences in your sport which provide the opportunity for kids to fall in love with your sport. When they love what they do - they do what they love. You know that teenage drop-out rate you keep talking about? The drop-out problem you've spent a lot of time and money on trying to figure out how to improve it? If they love what they do - they keep coming: drop out problem - GONE! #waynegoldsmith #wgcoaching #sportsparticipation #juniorsport #coaching #sportdropout https://lnkd.in/e3thpNd8
