As we’re approaching the end of another year (and getting used to the time change 😳), our team is reflecting on the work we do. Over the next couple weeks, we’re going to re-introduce our team members and share what gets them up in the morning. #CoastCommsTeam This week, we’re starting with Liam Sasky! He has extensive experience in stakeholder relations and politics, giving him a sharp eye when it comes to public affairs work. What gets him excited about work? Crisis situations. “I enjoy the intensity and pressure they bring—it’s when I get to work closest with clients, helping them stay grounded and see things objectively during a time of high stress for them. My focus is always on creating a strategic path forward, setting them up for long-term success. You know the saying, 'Teach a person to fish and they’ll eat for a lifetime’? Well, teach crisis communications best practices and they’ll be prepared for the next media storm!” If you need help with issues management or crisis communications planning, Coast Comms is here to help! Completed my last course of the Crisis Communications Certificate Program, Stakeholders and Community Engagement. Now, I wait for the grades to be posted, and to hear from the school. 😬 "Stakeholders can make or break a crisis response and are integral to an organization’s social ability to operate in a community.“ What is a crisis communicator? "A crisis communicator is a skilled professional who calmly navigates turbulent waters. They're the lighthouse in a storm, guiding others through crises with clear communication, empathy, and strategic thinking. They understand that in the face of adversity, words matter more than ever. A crisis communicator is not just a spokesperson; they're a trusted advisor, a problem-solver, and a guardian of trust, dignity, and reputation." ~ Eric Poirier ~ #crisiscommunications #crisis #emergencymanagement #incidentmanagement #businesscontinuity #informationofficer #incidentcommand #publicinformationofficer #media

How can you deal with a crisis that hasn't happened yet? 🤷♂️ Last night at the HEY Marketing Network, Suzanne Hughes MA MCIPR shared her insight and top tips for crisis communications. Something that stood out to me was how much you can do in advance to make sure you're prepared for a crisis... ↪ Be clear with leaders about the expectations around crisis communications and get their buy-in. ↪ What's the tone you want to set in different situations? ↪ Plan out which key partners and stakeholders might need to be contacted and make sure you have up-to-date contact details. ↪ What are your channels of communication and who has access to them? ↪ Who will do what? ↪ What are the sign-off processes for comms and can these be streamlined for a crisis situation?

During a crisis, it is imperative to lead communications with transparency from the get-go, sticking to the facts and leaning to the known - avoiding speculation. Before putting out any statements, sync with your organization and spokespersons, be certain that the statement put out is credible and verifiable, deliver essential information clearly and transparently, let your audience know what you know and what you don’t know, and that you will fashion them with any information lacking as soon as they are available to you. It is okay to issue the same statement to different audiences; giving different versions of statements to different audiences is a recipe for confusion and misinformation. Communicators ought to not only address the pressing crisis at hand, but they also need to communicate the steps being taken to begin the process of recovery, expressing genuine compassion to the affected and crafting communication with an end in mind. Allow room for joint communication with local authorities and first responders or differ to them to provide additional information, this strengthens the communications efforts and shows cooperation with relevant authorities. #CorporateCommunications #Crisis #LeadingwithTransparency #Communications

Crisis communication is a critical aspect of any business, ensuring resilience in challenging times. With 12 years of experience in PR and communications, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of effective strategies in navigating crises. Aside from safeguarding reputations, a well-crafted crisis communication plan offers various benefits: - Building Trust: Transparency and timely updates strengthen relationships with stakeholders. - Minimizing Impact: Proactive measures help mitigate negative effects on operations and finances. - Enhancing Preparedness: Having a plan in place enables quick and efficient responses, reducing confusion. - Safeguarding Brand Image: Consistent messaging upholds brand integrity during turbulent periods. - Facilitating Recovery: Clear communication supports recovery efforts and showcases commitment to addressing issues. What other advantages do you believe come from implementing a robust crisis communication plan? #PR #Communication #PublicPerception #StrategicCommunication #CrisisManagement
