Subsurface investigation is an important part of geotechnical work. For sites with shallow foundations, test pitting can be used to determine the surficial soil classification and relative density or consistency, depth to bearing, ground water table, and the presence of organics or fill soils. Site is a proposed subdivision project in Metchosin, within the geological formation of the Colwood Sand and Gravel Delta Outwash Plain. #yyjconstruction #victoriabc #britishcolumbiaconstruction #constructionservices #geotechnicalengineering #victoriacanadaconstruction

AS 1726:2017, which is the Australian Standard for Geotechnical Site Investigations, provides guidelines for the description and classification of soils and rock. For secondary or minor components of soil, the descriptive terms in AS 1726:2017 are as follows:Trace: Minor components that are present in very small quantities, less than 5% by weight. With: Minor components that are noticeable but do not dominate the soil composition, typically between 5% and 12% by weight.Adjective form of the component (e.g., sandy, silty, gravelly, clayey): When the minor component is between 12% and 25% by weight, it becomes a significant part of the description but still does not dominate the soil. These terms help to convey the relative abundance of the secondary or minor components within the soil matrix. #Geotechincal_Engineering

#DYK Geotechnical engineers use Dames and Moore samplers to collect undisturbed soil samples, crucial for assessing soil properties like strength and permeability. The rings within the sampler help maintain the sample's integrity during extraction, allowing accurate analysis of soil layers and conditions. #geotechadventures #cmtrocks #cmteam #geotechnicalengineering

Creep: A Possible Indicator of an Impending Landslide Creep, which is distinct from a landslide, involves the gradual movement of soil (up to 18 inches deep) downhill due to gravitational forces. Indications of creep can be observed in the bending of tree trunks, the slanting of utility poles, and walls that lean. It might signal the early stages of a landslide or occur atop an already existing landslide. To accurately distinguish between a landslide and creep, a detailed assessment by a geologist or geotechnical engineer is essential. Silty Clay or Clayey Silt, that is the question! Silty clay is common in Ontario, making it a key soil of concern for geotechnical engineers. Silt is difficult to differentiate from clay, but hydrometer tests can help. Pure silt can exhibit dilatancy and is difficult to improve. This type of soil retains moisture and is hard to drain, sometimes resulting in catastrophic consequences for building projects, if not handled correctly. Soil with a very high silt fraction can be challenging to characterize as it can behave like sand or clay. GeoSolv works with engineers on ground improvement projects in silt and silty clay (and clayey silt!) #GeoSolv #TheGroundImprovementPeople #WeFixDirt
