This week, as part of our 'All Nature' series, we spotlight Belmont Estate’s Watercress Farm Rewilding Project—a groundbreaking initiative near Bristol dedicated to restoring nature, reconnecting communities, and inspiring lasting ecological and economic success. The Watercress Farm, a key part of Belmont's larger mission to regenerate land and build natural resilience, is rewilding a once-degraded landscape. This initiative is not just about combating biodiversity loss, pollution, and flood risks, but also about creating safe havens for wildlife and offering free access to thousands of community members. It's about bridging gaps between people and nature, and promoting learning, exploration, and engagement with our natural surroundings. This rewilding initiative is more than environmental restoration—it’s a community-driven transformation. How do we work with local communities and stakeholders to promote #sustainable practices? 🤔 🤝 Community Mapping: Since 2015, we have collaborated with local communities in nearly 200 villages through Participatory Mapping (PM) to delineate critical areas of their lands and resources, setting aside areas necessary for food security and conservation. 🌳 Conservation Dialogues: We continue engaging these #communities through active consultations and discussions with relevant stakeholders and experts to create conservations plan through Participatory Conservation Planning (PCP), which has led to the preservation of 43,000 hectares of forests to date. 🌱 Sustainable Development: Through our #BrightFutureInitiative, we work closely with local communities, equipping them with knowledge about sustainable agricultural practices and growing their businesses. The Essex Local Nature Recovery Strategy public consultation closes in less than 1 week! Please make sure to get your responses in by Friday 25 October. More than ever, wildlife and their habitats are under threat for survival. It’s time for us to all play our part in assisting nature recovery in our county. The Essex Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) provides a new vision for our natural spaces, and the draft strategy is open for public consultation for your input and feedback. Introduced by the Environment Act in 2021, the strategy identifies opportunities for the creation of new habitats, which are most likely to provide the greatest benefit for nature and the wider environment. It has been created with input from landowners, farmers, environmental NGOs, charities, local authorities and members of the public. The draft LNRS outlines biodiversity priorities for nature recovery in the county as well as a series of proposed actions, known as potential measures, to achieve these. Your participation is crucial for delivering a robust strategy which collectively we can use to work towards nature recovery, shaping a thriving natural environment for Essex.
