The aftermath of the 2007 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2022 inflation continues to burden European citizens. Urbanization and housing shortages have made urban living spaces unaffordable, blurring the line between genuine housing and makeshift accommodations. The Liquid Housing Lab explores "liquid housing" to provide evidence, raise awareness, and find solutions, aiming to uphold the rights and dignity of those affected. The lab is implemented in Tarragona (Spain) and aims to enrich co-creation and participatory proceses for reframing housing policies while empowering citizens. How does this project contribute to fostering societal resilience? We have asked Héctor Simón-Moreno UNESCO Chair on the Right to Housing! Stay tuned! #Resilience #SocietalResilience #Housing #Foresight #Academi FUTURESILIENCE

Include non-human entities, alongside humans, in urban regeneration projects aimed at vulnerable groups at risk of exclusion. #GreenInCities goes far beyond Nature-Based Solutions. The project will develop a wide range of participatory tools and methods for humans and non-humans to analyse their needs. These tools will be used to design solutions that can enhance their health and well-being in the urban landscape In addition, a special focus will be on vulnerable groups to bring a more humanistic perspective to the project.

The Scottish Government is the only European country that has elevated the facilitation of #20minuteneighbourhoods to national policy. Because the government understands that with a complete and accessible #dailyurbansystem, there is less inequality and poverty, better physical and mental health for residents, a stronger economy, and less environmental impact. Whether we’re talking about a #10minutecity, a #15minutecity, or a #30minuteregion, it’s all about envisioning a sustainable, healthy, and livable country, region, city, or neighborhood. Proximity, accessibility, and inclusivity are key concepts in this vision. It requires the government and urban professionals to move away from complex-oriented thinking and working toward a more integrated approach (in terms of geography and socio-economic aspects). In this context, the Scottish government has published several highly interesting studies and guidelines (for local authorities). The latest addition is the ‘Scottish Government Planning Guidance: Local living and 20-minute neighborhoods’ (available here: https://lnkd.in/eVTYJ7CE). It is very readable, beautifully illustrated, and, most importantly, provides numerous references. It clearly describes the what and how of the 20-minute neighborhood and, even more importantly, outlines how to achieve it. This includes examining multiple case studies. Scotland is, of course, a very diverse country, with large cities and sparsely populated regions and islands. It’s fascinating to see how they’ve developed different approaches for various components. For every urban and design professional, this is definitely worth exploring!

What are #lonelyplaces? They are places presenting a #vulnerability in terms of lack or insufficient #local endowment, accessibility, or connectivity. Lonely #places are not necessarily poor, remote or #rural. Vulnerabilities have many faces and include several dimensions (e.g. physical infrastructure, access to schools, cultural facilities, democratic participation, migrants’ integration, etc.), which deserve to be analysed in order to support an integrated approach to localised challenges and solutions. We put our reflections on these issues into a #JRC report where we presented a unique spatial, multi-scalar and interdisciplinary approach to places, going beyond traditional operational classes of policy programmes, the urban/rural dichotomy, or administrative boundaries. The report is available here👇 https://lnkd.in/dfhqQi_v We believe that findings from this research can feed the current debate on left-behind or neglected places and inform evidence-based #policy actions to favour #cohesion among territories and avoid the possibility that places might act as an obstacle to individuals to achieving their full potential. Vulnerabilities can be transformed into #opportunities through a mix of people-centred and place-based approaches. New perspectives on territorial disparities: https://lnkd.in/dhY_gM5p A new report creating knowledge that goes beyond traditional operational classes of policy programmes, the urban/rural dichotomy, or administrative boundaries. It covers several dimensions, including: 👉 physical infrastructure 👉 access to schools 👉 cultural facilities 👉 democratic participation 👉 migrants’ integration and more, which are all useful to create fully integrated policies.

🏘️ As urbanization accelerates, #housing is a growing concern. The challenge is achieving #HousingForAll while ensuring #equity and #inclusivity. 📑 Paula Sevilla Nunez (Housing Justice Researcher at International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED))’s latest report, “Who Will Cities Be For? Inequality, Housing, and the Future of African Urbanization,” explores the challenges of an urban future and provides critical insights, including: 🌐 Urbanization presents unique opportunities to transform a society’s economic, social, and political landscape. 💪 Equal housing is a gateway for social, economic, and cultural rights. 💰 Housing is both a necessity and a profitable investment. 🏘️ Learn how urbanization is impacting the African region ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e-YdmVsE #SDG16Plus #LeaveNoOneBehind #Inequality #HousingJustice #SustainableDevelopment

#Housing is not only about building houses - it is the physical manifestation of a social contract. Urban policies that cater to the interests of a wealthy few exacerbate #inequalities and lead to the - often violent - exclusion of most urban residents. This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of #governance approaches to housing. It highlights the impressive work of so many African scholars and the tireless efforts of social movements and communities that are presenting alternative, inclusive policies to addressing the global housing crisis. While writing it, I deeply enjoyed exploring the links between the #SDG16Plus framework from Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies and the issue of housing and urban inequality, including through the housing justice propositions guiding our work at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Hope readers find it useful!
