𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 An event-driven architecture is a software design model that facilitates modern ERP systems in sending out event notifications to distributed and decoupled applications that are part of the business. An event can be described as any change away from the usual operations that is detected and transmitted by the ERPs to other systems. This allows companies to react faster and make instant changes in processes like production, and reassign resources. Interesting insights regarding the conversion from platform (mostly Windows for the traditional maritime ERPs) to web. Also called 'Re-platforming', there is no real way to convert but to rewrite the whole product from scratch, and still having to keep the following key points in the right balance: - Maritime ERPs are complex apps with many features and dependencies that are very hard to rewrite in a similar way - The available resources: Rewriting an app can be expensive and time-consuming, while remoting solutions may be a more affordable option. This is mostly why we see cloud hosting options but they cannot replace the native web fluid user experience that we all are just used to these days in all other areas of our interactions with solutions.
In 2018 we published in our blog an op-Ed on the premise of “conversion” of special versions into a single web version. Six years later, this article still relevant. As everyone is trying to figure out use cases for AI in shipping, the elephant in the room becomes an issue. Can your ERP architecture support the AI modules and models you want to implement ? and at what cost ? As early as 2015, it was the two largest ERP players of the time, who came out with announcements in Posidonia about their upcoming single web versions, and the market awaited eagerly, and waited. We posted at the time (in our blog post shared below), that companies that have built special versions will not be able to convert their clients into a single version. The challenge is not only technical but it's just commercially not viable. It would be as practical as converting all the engine rooms on your fleet to be identical. It can be done, but no one would ever agree to pay for it. Since then, both these companies have capitulated and have disappeared from RFPs in the past 36 months altogether. In recent RFPs, the market has shown a very clear vote of confidence, perhaps even maturity, to the single, fully integrated, web ERP. Many of the leading ship management companies now understand the false premise of “merging” special versions into a single version. It takes about 5-7 years and more than $50mm USD (in today’s costs) to build a single version that can accommodate more than 20 different work styles. Yet some still promise, and some buyers just want to believe, that it can be done. In the coming days we'll post some more interesting commentary about the value of a single version in the context of AI, as part of our upcoming announcements of UpWind and Yamba ai add-ons to the JiBe ERP environment. 📖 Read the full blog post below #JiBe #ERP #martimeinnovation #data #cloudbased #maritime #shipcrewmanagement #innovation

Steve Jobs once said: “What I love about the consumer market, that I always hated about the enterprise market, is that we come up with a product, we try to tell everybody about it, and every person votes for themselves. It’s really simple. With the enterprise market, it’s not so simple. The people that use the products don’t decide for themselves, and the people that make those decisions sometimes are confused.” This is so painfully true because enterprise software are mostly "management level" decisions. These decisions are mostly based on what they want to see at the end of the day (reports, etc). The actual user, who might not be very good at computers, have zero to no say in it. That's why, when implementing ERPNext, we interact more with the actual user rather than the management. This helps us understand what actually happens when things run in the wild. This way, everyone is (almost) happy. The management gets to see their reports and the user gets to use the software the way they want to. #erp #erpnext #enterprise #software
